Melbourne Cup prelim numbers up to 500k lower than anything previously recorded for the race.

The final numbers for 2018 were The Race: 1,899,000, Presentation: 1,454,000 Mounting Yard: 1,284,000, Late: 715,000

Nine records its best Tuesday share since June and is almost 10 points clear of Seven that drops 4 points from last week. 10 is steady despite the afternoon numbers. Nine won all metro markets with another 90 minute plus episode of The Block recording its best Tuesday number of this season.

Big number for 10 News in Melbourne.

Update: Live VPM rating for the race was 90,000

What a hug drop in total people for the Melbourne Cup.

The 10 curse.

Lowest FTA audience for the Melbourne Cup since OzTAM ratings began in 2001. It could be due to the public backlash over a recent ABC report on cruelty towards retired racehorses, or that the race was also shown on racing.com. It must be noted that just over 80,000 people went to Flemington yesterday, down on last year.
10’s Cup coverage did provide a big boost to the ratings of 10 News First in Melbourne. Seven News Melbourne’s ratings were slightly down on last Tuesday while Nine News was higher.

That is a shocking drop. VRC made a terrible decision switching from 7.

500k didn’t switch off due to the controversy.

I wonder how much of the 10 Melbourne Cup drop was cause people didn’t know it switched.

Seems anything on 10 rates low, and I wonder if people just don’t bother even trying to turn the TV to 10.

I watched the Cup via the Sportsbet App on streaming as to be honest, I didn’t even think of looking at Channel 10 at the time as I noticed earlier on it wasn’t on 7, so I just grabbed for my phone.

10 coming almost 4th in prime time after a big afternoon lead would surely be disappointing. Once the Melbourne Cup was over, it seems viewers switched off.

Agree. People have been saying and protesting this stuff for years so that many people just didn’t decide to flick off this year.

It will be interesting to see though if streaming numbers are up on previous years? They probably will be. Maybe a lot of pubs etc were playing racing, com as well. My local was.

2063 less attended than last year.

2018: 83,471
2019: 81,408

Depends on your definition of well down as to how it will be looked at. Noticed 7News is canning the race like it was a disaster attendance… Wonder if they would say the same if they were still the national broadcaster.

The ratings for the Melbourne Cup was lower than expected. You’d think that numbers would be higher than usual for their early prime-time schedule (like The Project), but seems like viewers returned to their normal viewing habits after the race.

Good to see Fat Pizza’s return on 7mate rate well for the channel

I wouldn’t say the attendance is well done. 2000 less is pretty much on par. But the television ratings are well done. However, it should be noted not one sports broadcast has been up on last years figures. Everything seems to be declining on FTA.

Aren’t Oaks Day attendance numbers generally higher than the Melbourne Cup these days? I think there has been a bit of a cultural shift over the years and some people started going to Oaks over the Melb Cup, due to people expecting Melb Cup to be more crowded on a Public Holiday.

Last year, Seven had a live VPM rating of 85,000 for Melbourne Cup - mounting yard and 57,000 for the post-race presentation, however live rating for the race itself was not available. Nevertheless 10 will be hoping the live streaming rating for yesterday’s race will be on par with last year.

Also, some people are streaming the Horse Racing on 10Play while others have headed on the big screens.

Ratings update for Cup with confirmed times

Race: 1.44 million

(Cup Race finished at a different time to what was registered with OzTAM.)

I think it’s safe to say that the Melbourne Cup no longer stops the nation.

Shocker result.
I reckon that it is partially due to the fact that it is on a new network… could grow over the next few years?

Maybe people are watching Melbourne Cup in different ways. For example:
LIVE: GROUP 1 - MELBOURNE CUP Sky Racing 75,000
The pay TV rating for the race was up on last year’s 61,000.

Game 2 of Twenty20 series between Australia and Pakistan rated very well on pay TV too. However the debut of His Dark Materials just made it into the top 20, a huge contrast to the record audience the drama received in the UK.

Mostly due to people slowly losing interest, I think. It is not what it was in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s where the race did indeed stop the nation. Many people have no interest in it. But those ratings no doubt underestimate the audience as they do not account for people watching in offices and at functions.
