Nine was back on top for Tuesday primetime up from the previous week. 10 also improved with Seven slipping slightly.

Of course the biggest audience was outside primetime. The Melbourne Cup drew just over 1.4 million for the race, almost 1 million for the presentation and 829,000 for the mounting yard. That compares to 1.3m, 1.1m and 830,000 for the 2019 coverage.

The Block was steady week on week, SAS Australia slipped to another low with third-placed Junior MasterChef up slightly from the previous week.

10’s early evening programs, News and The Project got a slight boost with the Cup lead in in some markets. It was The Project’s biggest audience in 2 months. It was the 2nd biggest Melbourne news audience of the year.

Just missing the top 20 were ABC’s Outback Ringer and Brock on Top.

SAS is losing numbers but it’s actually somewhat stable compared to the flop that was POO. Melbourne Cup does alright but there’s not as much flow on effect onto 10’s primetime ratings.

The Melbourne Cup TV ratings were up a little from last year, despite more criticisms online for 10’s coverage. The live VPM figures will be interesting (last year’s race had a live VPM rating of 90,000).

Melbourne Cup ratings were up this year due to no crowd numbers at Flemington. Would be very interesting to see the VPN numbers. I was very surprised with News, the project and Junior Masterchef providing a slight boost in ratings.
Tonight, Channel 9 is set to win thanks to origin. We will see Adelaide market outrating Perth market (due to the fact that it will be played in Adelaide oval.) I think we will see an Record NRL crowd in Adelaide oval.

I reckon that as long as SAS doesn’t drop below 600k then then they’re doing okay.

Probably more to do with more people working from home this year.

It is hugely disappointing that 10 cannot get any flow on to its prime time shows.

Perhaps next year 10 could follow what Seven did a few years ago with The Good Doctor and try to use the Melbourne Cup to launch a program?

Why would anyone even remotely interested in racing choose to watch 10’s coverage over racing.com?

Back when Ten had the Melbourne Cup rights the first time around, they used to use the commercial break immediately before the race to plug a big upcoming show. I remember one year they used the ad break to promote A Country Practice coming soon to Ten, and it had not even finished running yet on Seven. And I don’t think Ten’s production of the show had even started but they ran an ad just before the Cup race to let people know it was coming.

Going to prime time gave the AFL Grand Final a good boost, maybe Ten should petition for lights to be installed at Flemington and run the Melbourne Cup at night.
