For the last Tuesday of the survey the three commercial networks dropped slightly from the previous week.

In the case of Nine, this was due to 9Go! recording its second lowest share so far this year as the premiere movie Thor: Ragnarok helped to boost the main share. Nine won the night in Melbourne and Brisbane while Seven was ahead elsewhere.

10’s Amazing Race won at 7.30 as Zumbo fell to a yet another low. One Born Every Minute was a season high.

Fat Pizza suffered a drop from being the top mult-channel show last week and 7Mate’s share was down 1 point.

Thanks to 2001 drama-thriller “John Q” starring Denzel Washington. More a 9Gem movie, was odd to see on such a 16-39s channel in prime time.

The Amazing Race was down from last week as some viewers switched to the new season premiere of Young Sheldon. Thor: Ragnarok easily beat another premiere movie Geostorm.

The difference from last week was just 7,000 in total people. In the demos the 25-54 the number was just 1,000 less than last week and in 13-49 and 18-39 the ratings were higher.

Hmm, I wonder if some of the 63,000 additional viewers for Love On The Spectrum last night were watching Nine’s cross promotion ACA MAFS wedding “Special Event” last week? Although personally, I thought last night’s episode wasn’t quite as strong as the first. Perhaps my opinion will be different next week but at the moment, I’m wondering if four episodes were too many for Love On The Spectrum. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s still a very good concept and one Australian TV needs. But I do wonder if LOTS might’ve been better as just a one (which worked for Love Me As I Am - still think it’s a pity that SBS doco was vastly underwatched back in August but I digress) or two episode thing.

If the third episode of Fat Pizza: Back In Business was as bad as the first two, then I can definitely understand why that show had a significant ratings drop for last night’s fourth installment! Some people will probably disagree with me, but I honestly think that Paul Fenech should’ve just left Fat Pizza in the past and tried something else. While I wasn’t a fan of Here Come The Habibs or Street Smart either, at least Tahir Bilgic & Rob Shehadie (as two of the strongest supporting cast members in previous seasons of Fat Pizza and other Paul Fenech projects) had the right idea by moving onto new things rather than joining Paul in another series of a program that was first seen on SBS almost 20 years ago!

@TV.Cynic What was “Geostorm” ranking if I may ask please? It went head to head with Nine’s FTA premiere as well. Both networks arguably had similar less than amazing 7:30pm shows too, with the latter obviously stronger at 6pm, though seems Zumbo’s JD is poison

Geostrom ranked 24th

If 10’s 5pm news can outrate The Project 6.30 and CNG, I see no reason they can’t try and extend it til 7pm in some form. It’d be cheaper and a better use of news resources.

Except for the fact that they already tried that and it didn’t work.

I think the only thing that might work is changing the start of Ten News First from 5.00pm to 5.30pm and run it until 6.30pm. They will probably lose viewers in the second half but maybe dent Nine and Seven. However, they risk someone else putting in a bulletin at 5pm and really causing them pain.

The ratings for game shows and the project are far lower though than the news and the news is cheaper to extend and could possibly do better and make better use of resources. I’m not calling for a revolution but rather an additional bulletin

News is just not consumed in the same way now though. Putting just a news bulletin at 6pm might give them 300k but it will continue to lose viewers as news can be accessed in so many different ways. If 10 want to get into the news genre at 6pm they would need to look at reinventing the way it is delivered.

I can’t stand this argument, it makes no sense. The two highest rated shows almost every night is Nine and Seven News. 10 is airing news at the wrong time and not using resources wisely or promoting it properly, and haven’t for such a long time it’ll obviously take time to build credibility but doesn’t mean they shouldn’t try.

With a new decade on the horizon, I’d probably suggest that it’s not just 10 News First but everyone who needs to reinvent the way television news is delivered.

Two highest programs yes. But only at just over 1 million. That is 2 million that are already consuming news. There isn’t going to be many others wanting to consume news in the typical way at that time. I am not saying 10 shouldn’t try news but if they did it the same boring way that they are currently doing it then the most they are going to get in that slot is 300-400k. Surely 10 would be aiming higher? You would hope so anyway.

You are completely right. I am not saying its just 10. But I am saying if 10 wanted to make a mark with news they would have the reinvent it. Its another case of free to air being to slow on the uptake. Just like they were with streaming. The networks had their chance a long time ago to get onto streaming before Netflix came in and they didn’t bother. Fact is viewers consume news, drama and entertainment differently and networks need to be smart about how they deliver things to their audience.

Simply putting an extra 30 minutes or 1 hour, like suggested by @TVHead, isn’t going to cut it with the viewers. Viewers who are likely to give these things a go are not going to sit through an hour of news that they can quite easily watch in much less time on their phones.

I’ve seen your suggestions of Naked News and Courtney Act News, I can hardly take your suggestions seriously. What is different? The Project, it rates half of regular news. I don’t buy this argument. Local news is local news, it is what it is.

10 used to be a player in the local news market, it got left behind by the timeslot and peoples schedules changing. It can reenter the fray and be a player again if they make an effort.

I never suggested Courtney Act News.

I am not saying my suggestions are the answers. Nor am I saying The Project is the answer. However, The Project has a lot of views online which is important for the brand and what I am saying in the way viewers consume news differently. My point is perhaps news on free to air is simply not the answer and these short snips online are. But if 10 wanted to get into the news genre they would need to reinvent in. I would love 10 to try the boring news bulletin that would it would show you it wouldn’t work.
