This is the article I must have been remembering. It seems Seven have been wary about spending too much on sport for the last few years and probably why they weren’t prepared to bid ridiculous amounts for the Tennis this time.
We just have to wait and see what effect this has on other programs in the new year though.
That’s not entirely surprising when you consider how many nights and months a reality show (for example) runs, with consistent ratings and key demos.
Where the major sports are the winter codes which are only popular in specific markets, not making or losing money in the other markets.
And the national popular sports in summer run for way less hours/months and also in non-ratings.
I think networks have to pay overs to stop the risk of it getting picked up exclusively by streaming and online services such as YouTube. They star renegotiating it opens a door.
Sport is in some ways a loss-leader. Not that you necessarily lose money on it (although some do), but the advertisement opportunities/integration it offers is also attractive and the ability to promote shows as well. There’s always an audience for the top sports (although as we’ve seen from the BBL ratings, they can fluctuate), which doesn’t always apply to other content. Similar to news, there’s always going to be an audience for it.
Absolutely. State of Origin, NRL and AFL grand finals are always huge raters. Seven forked out huge amounts for exclusive Olympics and Commonwealth Games coverage. Big events, big dollars and big ratings but only airing for a limited time.
Given this, I find it slightly hypocritical when Tim spins cricket coverage (simulcasted) as some good deal because it provides heaps of hours of coverage every year (as opposed to exclusive Tennis). Are Olympics bad then because they only provide around 4 few weeks of coverage every 4 years (winter and summer included)?
I think the sport itsself comes ahead of the one-off events when negotiating rights.
As in, yes, it provides publicity for “most watched programs” and a huge influx of money from the event, but really its the 70-odd other matches in (for example) an AFL and NRL season that bring in the money from a full partnership and sponsorship deal.
On the other hand, this is what drew eyes to 10’s recent Melbourne Cup acquisition, which is really only a one-off with all that money bid, so certainly this deal is questionable!
It’s very sad. Basically free to air networks are saying they can’t afford coverage and Fox are scooping it up, along with viewers. The FTA networks should consider collaborating more with each other to stop Foxtel securing exclusive sports.
Is Foxtel really that popular with Aussie households? Where did they get all the money from? I’ve always found them annoying when they used to inundate our mail box with their crappy pamphlets.
Agree. I think the channel 7 and 10 deal with AFL years ago was a good example of this.
From my understanding sport is pay TVs biggest drawcard - denting it would allow more exposure of Aussie shows on FTA
But Fox also has to jack up subscription costs to help pay for the AFL, NRL and cricket rights. So fans and businesses are in a lose/lose situation.
I don’t think that matters as much now there are new and emerging players out there like Kayo. But take your point.
