#2

I expected more from the Ash Bart Aus open match.

#3

It was pretty one sided.

#4

15% ahead of their arch-nemisis is still pretty good though.

10 still holding up well and within close range of beating Seven in shares.

#5

Yes true, I streamed on 9now then switched off early in the second set when the outcome became more obvious.

#6

There was some viewers switching over to 10 after Ash Barty’s loss just in time to see Ajay Rochester eliminated from I’m a Celebrity.
Big drop off also from Barty’s match to the clash between Nadal and Tiafoe.

#7

The result was clear within the opening 10 minutes of Barty’s match. Simply not in the class of Kvitova, patriotism aside. Viewers turned off as well.

#8

Somewhat disappointing headline number for tennis, though Nine’s share easily beat competition. It’s hard to get one million viewers these days.

I’m a Celebrity was unaffected and increased on the previous Tuesday with NCIS: LA also doing better with new episodes. Ten ranked 2nd in Brisbane ahead of Seven and 2nd in Perth ahead of Nine.

Big Bash was again low with Seven’s network share its lowest since State of Origin 1 last year.

Sunrise was ahead by more than 50,000.

#9

Yes, true. The first set was a disaster for the aussie! Though she fought back well in the second, achieving two or three break points and could’ve capitalised and taken it to a third, but was broken late and failed to do so.

Mind you, the shares for Nine were the third highest since Federer’s Sunday night’s thriller loss and Saturday night, so Nine would be happy there.

NB/ Nine posted online that the Barty vs. Kvitova match itself actually rated higher than what the “night” coding says above, easily over 1m metro, probably takes out 15min before the match and half hour before 9:30pm where there was no play with Barty).

#10

Disappointing ratings for both Tennis and Cricket considering what a reality show is getting up against them.

I wonder if Sport is going to be the next area where the networks would want to negotiate the contracts down, seeing what they have all done with the American studio contracts in recent times.

#11

Cricket isn’t just disappointing it’s shocking on both Fox and Seven.

173k peak on Fox? Where have their viewers gone?

#12

If you’re pulling huge shares like Nine have for 9 nights in a row… Why? That’s what they wanted and that’s what they’ve got. 10 fold advantage leading-in to Married At First Signt over Seven and 10.

Networks must over-pay for the rights or a rival will snap them up quick smart (i.e.) Seven who just coasted along with TA giving them tennis every 5 years.

Am I wrong?

#13

Ratings were down because of the one-sided Nadal-Tiafoe match on the same night which didn’t help at all.

#14

Yes, you are wrong. They shouldn’t be overpaying what they’re worth. If they don’t get the ratings expected, which they promise their advertisers, they need to give them a refund or make up for it in other ways.

It’s not good business to pay more than something is worth, unless there are pay-offs in other ways. If Nine’s programs after the tennis, do better than last year, you could somewhat justify the added expense. But if they don’t then it’s a complete waste of money.

#15

I think that there might be a level of overpaying, especially when trying to outbid your rivals. Some will bid just to make others pay more which has an effect on the overall financial position for the network, as well.

It’s a risk reward game. A network might elect to pay more top stop another network having an advantage, rather than what the right are probably worth.

#16

Okay. So are you implying Nine would’ve promosjed advertisers more or vice-versa advertisers would’ve expected more? Because how could we possibly know this and I seem to recall a discussion with OnAir about this.

I would be surprised if Nine just talked raw ratings numbers for sessions, etc. As tennis matches are often so long and timeslots over-lap, everything very fluctuating. I would however not be surprised if Nine talked FTA share (“we can deliver a consistent 30%+ FTA market share nightly for your ad spots” or something). More deliverable?

Which Nine have well and truly delivered on (just a hypothetical), in fact better than Seven last year.

#17

What I’m saying is that Nine paid more for the tennis than Seven had paid before and were willing to pay now. While the costs to obtain the rights have been rising, ratings for the telecasts has been dropping.

Yes, we don’t know what ratings expectations Nine had for the tennis to sell advertising to advertisers. However, FTA share is not the most important thing for advertisers. It’s the total number of viewers and demographics of those viewers which they are interested in.

They want to reach the maximum number of potential buyers for their products.

#18

Nine will have pointed to Seven’s numbers last year and in previous years rather than promising specific numbers or shares. That’s a disaster waiting to happen.

#19

The ratings are still fairly good for FTA though and with streaming rights as well Nine are surely able to monetize the many ways in which viewers watch these days.

In my observation, while Nine’s telecast hasn’t been horrible, it has not been as smooth as Seven’s and I think Seven used their digital platforms better for the Open than what Nine has achieved/advertised, benefit of the doubt though, they may not have been able to fully execute given they had bid for the 2020-2024 rights and only negotiated the 2019 rights due to Seven having conflicting priorities.

#20

Interesting article from the archives here. Did you know Seven actually make more money from producing local entertainment content than they do sport? I was one of the people who thought Ten had committed ratings suicide losing major sport but it looks like they’ve spent less, got good results and head into 2019 stronger.
