The Melbourne Cup race topped Tuesday’s ratings with 1.213 million. That is the lowest recorded rating for the race and compares to 1.41 million in 2020 and 1.33 million in 2019. I suspect that OzTAM’s rule that programs must be at least 10 minutes long has seen more than just the race reported in recent years.

The result extended into prime time helping 10’s entire line up. The Dog House was the top entertainment show of the night with a series high audience winning its timeslot. The Cheap Seats that followed recorded its highest audience since launch to also win its timeslot up 40k week-on-week.

Overall Seven won the night despite Big Brother VIP again landing in fourth place at 7.30, steady with the season launch. Conjoined Twins that followed had half the audience of The Cheap Seats but was just ahead of Love Island. 10 won the key demos with Nine second.

For Nine, parental Guidance dropped 80,000 from debut to see Nine slip by 4 points from the previous Tuesday. Later, Love Island was down 40k to its lowest Tuesday of the season.

ABC’s share was up slightly despite its post 7.30 line-up missing the top 20.

I’m surprised 10 News First Adelaide did as well as it did.

Although the TV figures for 10’s Melbourne Cup telecast were down on last year, the live streaming figures on 10play will be interesting, as many Melburnians were out and about yesterday, taking advantage of the warm and sunny weather.

10 News First was third in Melbourne from 5.30pm to 6pm despite the Melbourne Cup lead-in.

007 movie Tomorrow Never Dies topped multichannel ratings by a long way. It was trending on Twitter last night with discussions on the similarities between the villain Elliot Carver (Jonathan Pryce, who will portray Prince Philip in the final two seasons of The Crown on Netflix) and Rupert Murdoch, given the recent controversies on News Corp.

Four splits for the Cup is a bit much. I get race and presentation, but do we need a split for mounting?

What was on GO!? 0.9% share - less than SBS Food and 10 Shake.

Lowest audience numbers for the Melbourne Cup in OzTAM history but still number 1 program for the day.
The days of seeing 2 million metro viewers watching the Melbourne Cup are long gone.
Nevertheless, Thr Dog House beat Parental guidance in its 7:30pm time slot.

Something Australians didn’t want to watch!

GO! Is a shadow of what it once was!

Live tennis. It was the Billie Jean King Cup (formerly Fed Cup) tie between Australia and Belgium. I wonder if it was promoted during Nine News at 6pm last night?

Can we call The Dog House a hit? It’s by far 10’s most successful new show of the year and is building every week.

Thats been the case for the last 9 years of coverage across Seven and 10’s coverage. 10’s coding is pretty much identical to what’s been seen since 2012.

I think we can. It’s beating the crap out of the Bachelor franchise which used to be a ratings winner and also Celeb Masterchef on some occasions so it’s definitely drawing a decent crowd.

The Cheap Seats would also be in that category as it’s 10’s 3rd best post-8.30 show after HYBPA and Gogglebox.

Actually that’s not true. The Dog House beat it by 1,000 in the 16-39 demo.

As usual when it suits, Nine switch to reporting ratings for “Australia” i.e., metro + regional .

Good to see The Dog House do well. Even I tuned in or a bit and was hooked with the stories.

The Parental Guidance drop doesn’t look good, beaten by The Dog House.

Looks like Sky Racing 1 didn’t bother coding the race separately.
It would be interesting to see the ratings for the race on Sky Racing 1 and Racing.com but these are never published.

Does the bolded bit mean it’s hard/unfair to contrast yesterday’s figures with figures from before 2019?

The reason why I ask this is the numbers for the Melbourne Cup race have fallen significantly since the rights switched from Seven to 10. What I’m curious about is what that suggests - is it:

  • a) The Melbourne Cup (as an event) doesn’t have the reverence it perhaps once had and that’s reflected in its recent ratings;

  • b) A reflection on 10 either from a promotional (ie; their promotional strategy for the Cup Carnival hasn’t worked) or viewership (ie; since more people watch Seven than 10, fewer people are seeing promotions for the Cup) POV; or

  • c) A bit of both?

I think the Melbourne Cup being available on more than one channel (RACING.COM and even Sky Racing going by parano1a’s post above) has also diluted the FTA ratings.

Even if you had Pay TV, in previous years you HAD to watch the Melbourne Cup on FTA as Sky wasn’t allowed to run it.

What about d) society’s attitudes are changing towards an event that revolves around animal cruelty, gambling, alcoholism, and trashy behaviour
