I would imagine there would be some disappointed TV executives waking up to this morning’s overnight ratings especially at Seven and Nine. While both networks still dominated the network shares and even tied for the night there were disappointing numbers for sports on both.

The first game of the BBL season got underway but even with a close result it averaged a disappointing low 273,000. That compares to last year’s first game that averaged 446,000 (following Bathurst) and most of last year’s results that were in the high 300,000s. STV numbers were at 155,000 compared to 200k last year.

Meanwhile the FINA Swimming on Nine didn’t make the top 20 for the first night of finals. Nine was lucky to get another boost from 9Gem.

For 10, the first episode of Crossfire was also missing from the top 20 though Ambulance Australia was up 40k on the previous week. ABC got one entry post 7.30 with a repeat of Anh’s Brush With Fame.

Big numbers for Sunrise, its best since broadcasts associated with the Queen’s funeral while some uplift in news generally including in Brisbane.

Wow, low numbers for both BBL opener (absence of Stars batter Glenn Maxwell due to a broken leg didn’t help) and the first night of World Short Course Swimming Championships.

Crossfire missed the top 20 but hopefully will pick up some viewers through consolidated. Maybe people will record the series and binge it over Christmas?

The finale of The Challenge Australia also missed the multichannel top 20.

Quick Update:

Crossfire was 23rd, Swimming 26th - let down by almost no viewers on 9Gem in Perth.

Today 21st.

Bad numbers for BBL and swimming. BBL only got 273k viewers while Swimming got < 200k and was forth in its timeslot. Makes me wonder if Nine will decide to move the night swimming to 9Gem?

As for BBL, 10 needs CA and CA needs 10. If CA decided to sign another deal with Seven and Foxtel then Cricket will be dead in Australia. The BBL, T20s and ODIs have all died since Seven/Fox got rights.

Hopefully it improves with more awareness… but its clear people are growing tiresome of the BBL format.

The ratings for the Ashes and Australia-India test series suggested otherwise.

Terrible figures for the Big Bash on Seven.

However you can understand why Ten are bidding for the exclusive rights for the cricket because the cominbined figures for the tests on Seven and Foxtel were over 700,000 people most nights and the exclusive rights for the Big Bash would bring in over 400,000 viewers a night

This is the type of thing that would really help the Ten Network, not Waleed Aly.

They’d be mad to move the swimming to 9GEM - the Bond movies currently on GEM will get bigger in ratings as they go on - although last year, the Bond movies went to Nine once they got into 2000’s releases.

They won’t be getting all those numbers. If they are paying 200mil year they are going to want to have a lot of new Paramount Plus subs.

Nine was ahead on the night by 0.02 with a win in Sydney by 1 and Brisbane by 7. Seven won the key demos as well as Melbourne by 0.4, Adelaide by 9 and Perth by 3.

Is this the first time Seven has coded the BBL as one programme?

I think Seven coded it as one program last season.

But before then, it was coded as at least three segments (session 1, innings break, session 2). Not sure if pre-match and post-segments were included or not.

Glad that Seven coded the actual game as the one segment - unlike their other daytime programs that have multiple codings…

No. Same as 2021.

Strange comment!

It is not strange at all because all the money the network has invested in Waleed Aly and Lisa Wilkinson has been an absolute disaster

If they were to become the cricket network (similar to how Nine used to be), it would be a move that would pay dividends for the struggling station

Yet again, The Project at 7pm is the highest rating show for Ten in primetime. Ambulance Australia that followed rated lower.

Sure, their 6-7pm ratings are dreadful. But with a new host and some new series producer starting in the new year for 2023 for The Project, there is a glimmer of hope that it will rate more next year. Time will tell.

Then they are going to need to start peforming very soon because the reality is you don’t get years and years to fix something on television.

It is a strange comment… in regards to your second comment, how much is 10 paying him?

Do they reduce the salaries of the football players if the team comes last? No. As long as the show makes money from advertisers, they can keep paying their presenters and everyone who works on the show.
