Nine took out the first summer ratings Tuesday winning across the east coast plus Adelaide while Seven was on top in Perth. Nine also won the key demos with 10 ranking second just ahead of Seven.

The top 10 last night consisted of news, current affairs, afternoon game shows plus the morning episode of Bluey. The top primetime entertainment show post 7.30 was 20 to One with just 353,000, just ahead of Outback Ringer and a repeat of Ambulance Australia while Seven’s offering of 10 Years Younger in 10 Days was 23rd.

New NCIS was up almost 70k week-on-week to win the timeslot from Wild Australia on ABC. Kath and Kim on Nine was 24th and 33rd with Seven’s movie 32nd.

Wow Nine News won both half hours in Adelaide, with a massive win in the 6.30 half hour.

Massive audience for Bluey’s Christmas special.
Nine News won across the hour in every city except Perth.

The way its going, next year is going to be very very interesting for news in Adelaide. Now the weeknight numbers are starting to shift too.

Nine news Adelaide on the way up. Next year Nine News will become competitive against seven.
The Perth market continues to be a basket case in ratings.

Perhaps Adelaide viewers are beginning to feel a bit neglected and taken for granted by Seven. They’ve woken up to the fact they are at the bottom of the five city metro priority list for the network and a lot of the fat Seven has trimmed has come at the cost of localism.

They’ve lost several much loved local personalities in the last few years, TT was axed, they’ve had their local afternoon bulletin cut at a time when there was a big demand for news with the decision only being reversed following much embarrassment from negative press and Nine capitalising on the poor decision. Adelaide viewers have also demonstrated a clear preference for the double header 6pm news format. It has been customary for generations and now the bulletin has been downgraded by having a solo presenter just as Nine is making inroads with a great team in Brenton and Kate.

There’s little doubt Adelaide viewers aren’t feeling the love from Seven and have started to drift elsewhere.

The cynic in me thinks that the axings of Today Tonight, local lifestyle shows and briefly the afternoon news this year is a network decision rather than a local one. It seems to me that the network wants to cut costs from what they deem as ‘low’ priority and keep what they think is much more important. I think Seven Adelaide themselves didn’t want to axe their local talents and do anything too radical but couldn’t override the network decision to preserve some network failures like Sam Armytage, Mark Ferguson, Plate of Origin etc. The biggest question in my mind is how much money would Seven have saved by axing the afternoon news and two popular local personalities in Adelaide? I wouldn’t say very much.

Seven News Adelaide used to do very well on weekends with Jessica Adamson and Tim Noonan so having both of them axed would’ve been quite the sour pill to take despite Rosanna being an excellent replacement and may have contributed to the ratings fall. The Afternoon news is still great but it was replaced by the inferior Melbourne bulletin for too long that Nine used the opportunity to take a jab at them.

As for the 6pm bulletin, very good to see some competition but be aware that Nine Adelaide has won some nights in late 2015 but that all dissipated into the new year so a number of wins isn’t enough to indicate a pattern of switch-off just yet.

You know it’s the non-ratings period when a children’s program such as Bluey (which aired in the morning) outrated all post-7:30pm entertainment programming…

Said it before and will keep saying it - the non-period period desperately needs to be eliminated. There’s no other country (at least to the best of my knowledge) where the major networks simply ‘give up’ for two months of the year. The notion that what airs on December 1st isn’t as ‘important’ as what airs in the middle of June is not only absurd but a relic of the past when this period wasn’t an issue considering there were only a few channels. All the non-ratings period does now is hold back Australian television and act as one giant reminder for people to watch Netflix/Stan/Prime Video/etc instead. How the networks don’t realize that is something I’ll never understand.

Their excuse is that there’s no money to invest but I take that as a rubbish excuse. Networks need to program for 52 weeks a year (that’s including sports). End of story.

I’ve been saying this for years. At a time where companies are looking for consumers in the lead up to Christmas and people going on holidays, advertisers have dollars to spend. It’s absurd that our commercial networks abandon programming everything that would attract viewers.

Yep, an anachronism of a time long since gone.

Given networks can present/spin ratings to advertisers in almost any way they want, it seems like a weird old relic and it’s surprising that none of them having taken the bull by the horns and pumped high quality content right up to Christmas Eve. Imagine if Nine had run The Block up to the 23rd or the other channels had a tent pole through the month.

As @Jeffmister has mentioned, you’re simply training viewers to go to streaming at this point of the year and the number of those “returning” in the new year diminishes further.

Data © OzTAM Pty Limited 2020. The Data may not be reproduced, published or communicated (electronically or in hard copy) in whole or in part, without the prior written consent of OzTAM. “Overnight” figures include “Live” (programs broadcast during the 2am-2am broadcast day) and “As Live” (programs recorded and then watched within the same broadcast day). “Consolidated” figures include Live, As Live and “Time Shift” (programs recorded and then watched within seven days of the initial broadcast).

867,000 is the second highest 7-day timeshifting audience in OzTAM history. Bluey’s November 11 episode still has the highest figure with 901,000.
The bumper increase pushed up ABC Kids’ audience share by 1.8%.

Exactly and they want live TV, catch up is too late, so the extra 100k consolidated for dramas have missed the promos etc.
