FlixBus is going to provide competition on the Melbourne-Canberra-Sydney corridor against existing operators like Firefly Express, Greyhound and even V/Line.

I suppose will be more of a success than those Canberra to Avalon flights.

Can’t see it being competitive Melbourne to Canberra with Vline, both on price and the fact that you get to do it on a train to Wodonga first, which is far more pleasant than the coach the whole way.

Albury to Melbourne will also be a lot more popular than one would expect I think, especially being priced at $10 each way.

Both ways have a service at a good time of day (MEL>ABX 10:20am-1:35pm) and ABX>MEL 3:50pm-7:25pm), it’s priced at around the same as the competing V/Line train service, and is actually quicker than the V/Line at 3 hours 35 minutes vs 4 hours (if you’re lucky) on the V/Line. The V/Line is also overcrowded especially on weekends as the V/Locity trains have less capacity than the old N Sets they replaced.

Can see the Albury to Canberra leg being relatively quiet, but Albury to Melbourne and Sydney to Canberra will both provide welcome boosts to capacity on those corridors.

Coming in 2027.

Denpasar and Singapore will be Sunshine Coast Airport’s second and third overseas destinations. Jetstar and Air New Zealand currently fly between Sunshine Coast and Auckland.

Might explain why my flights home from Las Vegas were cheaper than my flights to there. Going over on United via LAX but coming home via 3 day in Honolulu with Hawaiian Airlines. About $400 cheaper

Possibly, but having said that, I flew Jetstar SYD - HNL return a couple of years ago, flights were $1,000 going over but return was only $400. Maybe just a coincidence.

I think you underestimate people wanting to catch the bus. I have done the Melbourne - Adelaide one and it’s often sold out. The bonus of these services is they will do unique stops. It works well for me as I get off at Mount barker which isn’t too far from my house. it certainly saves money and is almost just as convenient as flying for those that live outside the cbds.

The Victorian Government will fund a new bus route from Lara V/Line station to Avalon Airport (route 18).

I put my old address in to try out what they currently suggest as a public transport route from Geelong to Avalon Airport, at the moment it’s a near 3 hour trip, including going to Werribee to pick up the Avalon Airport Express Skybus, so it’s quite an improvement.

Just baffling for this to be new though, but at least it’s a public bus not a ‘SkyBus’.

Oh the Geelong/Western Melbourne bogans on a Bali flight to/from Avalon would be wicked fun. Poor cabin crew.

Jokes aside, great to see some more variety of flights running from Avalon, especially internationally.

I’m sure many of them don’t want to work on any Bali routes

I flew back just a couple of weeks ago from Bali to Brisbane, and our flight was remarkably civilised. I had an informal chat to a couple of the cabin crew mid-flight and remarked that to them, and their response was that it was highly unusual that this flight was so well behaved.

Regional Express has secured a new owner, ending more than 15 months of uncertainty for the embattled airline and its employees.

Creditors have voted in favour of a Deed of Company Arrangement proposed by US-based Air T, paving the way for the regional carrier to resume normal operations under new ownership.

The vote was confirmed at the second meeting of creditors for the Rex Group, which includes Rex Airlines and some of its subsidiaries.

The deal will see Air T take control of Rex’s regional business, pilot training academy, maintenance services, and frequent flyer program once conditions of the DOCA are satisfied.

Transition of operational control and legal ownership is expected before mid-December 2025.

The DOCA only applies to the regional arm of Rex, which operates Saab 340 aircraft to 54 airports across Australia.

Rex Airlines Pty Ltd, which ran the carrier’s 737 capital city network, will be placed into liquidation and is not part of the Air T acquisition.

Jetstar will launch a new Newcastle-Denpasar-Singapore service from late March 2026. It will extend the current three weekly flights between Newcastle and Denpasar to Singapore, plus a new fourth weekly flight between these cities.

This was covered on NBN News last night.

EDIT: the Denpasar-Singapore sector will be reassigned from the extension of one of four existing Melbourne-Denpasar flights.

Does Newcastle have international flights? Is this a first?

The Newcastle-Denpasar flight was the first.

I think some years ago, there were some flights to Auckland, but I don’t think they were very successful.

They were seasonal. Operated by Virgin. But from what i can see they only go to Queenstown now.
