Tokyo Olympics Coverage

So do we think they’ll be hosting from the IBC in Tokyo?

In 2016, the commentary of the Opening Ceremony for 7 was done from the stadium in Rio and was commentated by Bruce & Johanna Griggs who were in Tokyo.

In 2020, the people commentating the opening ceremony are also the hosts of 7’s coverage. So, either the commentary of that will be done from Australia and the hosts hosting in Australia.

Or, it’s all being done from Tokyo.

So, no Bruce for the Opening Ceremony? He’s done them all.

My hosting team would have Beretts and Gillies in there with no cricketers.

No Jim Wilson?

Given the current state of the world I’d probably expect Seven’s coverage and commentary of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to be all done in Australia…if they aren’t postponed or cancelled!

It would be better to have commentary done in Australia, rather than Tokyo. This means it will cut cost of flying from Australia to Japan. I guess that’s they might have to do commentary in Melbourne studios. I know that Peter donegan did the world feed during the Olympics 2 years ago.

It would not be better. It’s cheap and nasty. Couldn’t care less of they’re losing money. They shouldn’t have bought the rights if they can’t do it properly. It lacks authenticity.

That’s presuming the olympics are going ahead. As much as the IOC is assuring everyone that it’s all good with the current situation it might all change and they might do an Australia F1 Grand Prix this morning.

If it does go ahead and conditions improve then we should expect them to be able to do their commentary in Tokyo. It’s their best event, otherwise they might as well not cover it at all.

The idea of McLachlan and McLaughlin leading the coverage is extremely unappealing.

They are awful.

I do not know how mclahchlan ever became a network sports anchor. He just appeared one day. God knows what his history in media was.

Brother of Gillon. Probably is written in their over-inflated AFL contract.

Mel would be fine as a reporter, but why would anyone choose those two and Sonia Kruger over the likes of Kylie Gillies, Mark Beretta and Jim Wilson. It doesn’t make sense.

I don’t mind Sthalekar or Abbey Way but they would be better off having Ricky Ponting as a host instead of Trent Copeland.

Hamish has been the anchor of popular AFL panel show AFL Game Day on Seven for 13 years running.

He also had various roles on their tennis coverage for 10 years, eventually replacing Johanna Griggs as prime time host in 2013, she herself replaced Matt White as prime time host in 2009.

He started hosting prime time AFL (instead of Bruce McAvaney and Dennis Cometti) around 2015 as well.

Before that prior to 2008, he had 10+ years of worldwide sports media / business work. He has horse racing roots back to South Australia.

Basil Zempilas confirmed last year it’s been Seven’s plan to build Hamish as Bruce McAvaney’s future replacement.

I’m really surprised Mark Beretta, Jim Wilson and Kylie Gillies aren’t be utilised. They have been staple members on the Olympic team over the years.

Can’t have them going forever, I think they’d agree. It’s refreshing.

Jim’s still part of the team, but Paralympics instead. Just like in 2016 Johanna did Rio Paralympics instead of the main one (she was only used at the Opening Ceremony).

Considering Kruger jumped back to Seven in part because of the Olympics, it’s not a surprise she’s playing a high-profile role in the coverage

Agree with you though that Mel and Hamish shouldn’t be the primetime hosts - the former isn’t a great live tv presenter while I have no idea what Seven sees in the latter

It seems like Sthalekar, Copeland and Way won’t be presenters per se but rather they’ll pop in and out of the coverage to provide updates on what’s going on

Probably only because of this:

Anyone else get the vibe Seven are heavily utilising / pushing Bruce McAvaney more than ever with this Olympics? It’s like he’s a God!

Are you questioning that? Blasphemy. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

He looks bloody frail and old though!

Phil Rothfield has posed this question in his weekly column on The Sunday Telegraph today:

Which female Channel 7 sports presenter is absolutely furious at being overlooked for Olympics coverage from Tokyo? She will present out of Melbourne instead.

I think she is either Abbey Way or Johanna Griggs.

Probably, considering that Abbey would be happy to just be included!
