Surely other talent could’ve taken the chair? Alex Henkie, Reece D’Alessandro…

Jack Hahn did well during his time filling in on news desk as-well

Perhaps they’ve all fallen out of favour?

Sarah has been on the show for a while.

Today has a gift card giveaway associated with Mother’s Day 10sec only promos; very poor effort compared to Sunrise’s promos for next week that also included content teasers.

Jayne co-hosting this morning. Felix with sport from Melbourne (Danika sick).

Karl hosted a great live stream event tonight in the lead up to the Farrer Byelection. In front of a large audience in Albury he interviewed Matt Canavan and Pauline Hanson and hosted a debate with all the candidates. This could have easily been a Nine event, but instead it was solely Karl.

It was a great event but exemplifies that it will become untenable for Karl’s booming podcast and YouTube channel to coexist with his hosting the today show.

It feels like the tv show severance. Karl hosting Today and Karl hosting his podcast feel like two completely seperate entities that don’t even seem to acknowledge the existence of the other.

His podcast will often slag the “mainstream media” failing to state that he is the host of one of the nations biggest news and current affairs shows. It then also feels odd to see him presenting news “impartially” on Today and then a few hours later go online to vent as nausea on his strong views. He uses his podcast as a place to investigate stories, interview, advocate for issues and express his true opinions.

For fans of his podcast there is no incentive to watch Today. The Podcast is his authentic self where he can unleash his true personality. Why would they want to watch a watered down tamed version of that on Today.

Nine could have harnesses Karl and has his podcast and YouTube series fall under the Nine umbrella. Instead they’ve missed a massive opportunity and have allowed Karl to leverage off his today profile to create a media platform that could eventually have a larger audience and impact than Today.

Creator economy.

In 10-15 years media personalities will be able to completely bypass tv networks and radio stations and reach fans directly.

Look at Meghan Kelly, piers Morgan. Now Karl.

I doubt Karl could do the type of podcast he’s doing (nor have the latitude to express ‘his truth’) if it came under the Nine umbrella.

It’s very interesting watching this one play out, his following has grown significantly. I like what he did with the by election last night, it’s not just one on one stuff, he is definitely trying to build a machine here.

I can only imagine the fatigue around trying to standup what appears to be an independent media arm, while committing to 3am wake-up calls during the week.

I wonder if walking away from TV will impact his reach. We have seen people drift off and become irrelevant after trying something similar, one really needs create a machine before walking away. I think the Radio connections to this might have legs. Certainly will need to keep his name out there, probably has 20 years tops to run until retirement.

Was the host trying to blend into the couch and cushion with his beige suite and green shirt?

TV viewership is dying. Nine’s business strategy is to focus on digital moving forward… he’s much better off doing the podcast? He’s respected for his work and clearly has an audience around him.

Way more growth and earning potential heading down his own path at this stage and remain with Nine part time.

He also gets more freedom around discussions and opens up more doors for hard-hitting journalism which Today Show doesn’t have…
