Today (2015-Sept 2020)

While I’m disappointed they didn’t make any studio or graphics changes, I think you’re overstating how much the average viewer truly cares about those things.

Agreed. Where a show like Today is concerned, I know this average viewer is more interested in the content - and to a lesser extent the people presenting it - than I’ll ever be about sets and graphics.

Promos, sets, graphics - they’re trivialities to me, superficial things that are basically unimportant. If people actually choose one (brekky) show over another based on these sorts of things…well, to me that’s a bit odd. Each to their own, I suppose.

“ON JANUARY 22, EVERYTHING CHANGES”

Ok boys, let’s change the set colours.

Nah mate, not doing that.

Oh ok, then let’s move the desk and seating.

Nah mate. It’s staying.

Ok, well hows about we fix the lighting and get some now panels on the walls?

No mate, not doing that.

Oh ok, well, let’s change the graphics and opener.

Get real mate, not doing that.

Oh ok.

ON JANUARY 22, EVERYTHING CHANGES

Except. It doesn’t. And didn’t.

Still no Perth Today live this morning. Perhaps its not returning.

I’ve also been wondering when/if it will return. Sunrise Perth News took a short break around xmas but has been back for weeks now.

Was about to say, i get the feeling it has been quietly axed.

Should that be “failure to relaunch”?

And the Today version was far superior than the Sunrise version we get served with.

If the Tim/Emmy change was a cost cutting scenario then chances are this has gone too.

Format changes:

  • The 5.30 news now runs until 5.45. This isn’t the first time but considering it was a slow news day, perhaps it is here to stay.
  • The 5.55am fluff segment remained, but was shorter in duration. TBH, I don’t know what is worse the Hollywood Gossip or this. Today should look at either having Natalia do the weather at 5.45 or Ross to do business and finance news to fill theses two/three minutes.
  • Just before the 6.00 weather, the team discussed/debated a hot topic at the desk for a few minutes.
  • Money Minute segment has been axed
  • A shortened two-minute Entertainment news just before 7am.
  • The 7.55 segment was a more serious interview (teaching kids about the #MeToo campaign) compared to what usually appears.
  • Sylvia conducts more live interviews with specialists during her news bulletins
  • The viral videos segment appeared at 8.15
  • The ‘Head to Head’ segment has been replaced with a finance segment called ‘Your Money’ with Ross joining the team at the desk
  • At 8.55 is the celebrity interview.
  • After the 9am news and entertainment, Karl and Georgie threw to David and Sonia through the two-way boxes. David and Sonia said what was coming up and then went to an ad break. It was much better than last year.

The lack of lifestyle and consumer stories was nice and the rundown was slightly better. If any Today producers are reading,, watch what Weekend Sunrise did at the start of last year or in 2011. Have more special investigations and debates.

Lol at the caption. There couldn’t be a less subtle way of taking a dig at Lisa :joy:

I assume the lack of CONFIRMED is because the exec producer hasn’t responded to your tweet from over a week ago?

It was probably unrealistic to expect a full-on relaunch this morning but since Today have had a rough 12-18 months or so (with debacles like the “Australia’s #1” promo thing and of course the Lisa Wilkinson saga), even a minor On-Air Presentation refresh for the new format would’ve been welcomed. A missed opportunity in that area IMO.

The promotional strategy was all wrong too, with serious and almost threatening-sounding “On January 22…everything changes (not really)” promos in particular being the wrong way to go.

Honestly Nine, breakfast TV needs a different promotional approach to something like 60 Minutes or the 6pm news. Georgie’s return to Today probably should’ve been launched with the tagline “Georgie’s Waking up with Today again!” (a spin on the “Wake up with Today” promotional line of recent years) and a promo that had the whole cast/crew cheering on GG as she walks into the studio and takes her seat alongside Karl! Cheesy idea to most of us, but probably something that the average viewer at home would lap up.
