I am shocked at those Commonwealth Games numbers. They are so low. Still it is a good result for Seven I guess, as they won by a big margin.

Commonwealth did well to win the night.
Interesting to see Seven code the games into five segments = Day; Afternoon; Evening; Night and Late. What times to the “evening” finishes and “night” segments starts? Same for “Day” and “Afternoon”?

Gogglebox is the highest entertainment program for the night.

No NRL in the top 20. Ouch. Wonder how the Footy Show did… pains to think about it haha

Gogglebox rebounded from last week’s pre-Easter low while Show Me the Movie was steady.

But they are higher than those at Glasgow four years ago when Ten had the coverage, especially the audience watching on the main channel.

Comm Games did much better than I thought, as the swimming didn’t start until 7:35pm and chopped/changed often.

Huge main channel share.

They’ll be a bit disappointed with 7Two’s audiences, even Pyeongchang 2018 achieved better (by about 200-300k one night on 7mate)! Still, it was only Night 1 and was the top multi-channel.

Sorry, but for a major domestic sporting event that attracts international competition — those ratings are underwhelming.

It will be interesting to see the streaming figures from Seven to see if some viewers prefer to stream the broadcast on their mobile devices or Chromecast or Fetch set top box.

Yeah this is what I was expecting from the commonwealth games. Not great figures but helping to win the night convincingly. I expect it to rate lower when the swimming finishes.

Athletics with Bruce should do well.

Not as well as swimming. Australians are sore losers and like to win. Australia aren’t as good in the athletics as they are in the swimming.

I don’t think Raiders/Bulldogs would attract too much interest in Qld, even if the Comm Games weren’t going on.

Checked the first night of competition from Rio 2016 (Sun 6 Aug 2016), not exactly like-for-like, but still.

Main channel was lower (28%).

But 7Two and 7mate were higher (over 5% and 4% respectively), also ranking during afternoon.

Perhaps there wasn’t any good events shown on 7Two last night, though netball and late hockey would’ve drawn some. But neither were that exciting or riveting.

7mate will be huge tonight and tomorrow night, with the AFL on top of the first hour with Comm Games.

I’m also keen to see how 7flix rates tomorrow afternoon, carrying 7Two’s coverage all afternoon in most markets (espeically if there’s good/thrilling events). Could set record audiences for the channel, Big Bang got over 200k a few times.

Share is brilliant. But if they’re selling advertisers spots promising 2 million viewers or more (and the eyeball numbers are under that), then there would be a problem. Because I assume the goal would be to at least recoup the investment made to secure the broadcast rights.

Definitely but I doubt they would be promising 2 million or more viewers. They won’t make their money back on their investment. They never do. But they would be looking at how they go after the commonwealth games. If shows that would fail without it (back with the ex, dance boss, mentor, interview etc) can be hits then they would probably take that.

I don’t know why people are constantly shocked that anything rates lower than it did in the past when we know that there are do many more entertainment alternatives these days.

It’s dramatically lower. Most people expect declines. But this is live sport and a major event happening in our own country. The network paid big bucks for the exclusive rights. I believe they would have been expecting more.

And it was the first night of competition which usually rates much higher than the second week. The numbers could have been much lower if a Qld team played in the NRL last night. Raiders never draw eyeballs.
With competition from both the AFL and NRL tonight, Comm Games ratings could fall below 1mill.

The ratings are fine, Opening Ceremony managed just on 2m. So naturally competition was always going to be MUCH lower than that. Surprised it wasn’t below 1m!

It’s the era we now live.

I don’t see AFL/NRL affecting Comm Games tonight, but the other way around, for starters AFL will be well down on 7mate.

It was a Thursday, TV’s ‘dead night’.

Sunday prime-time will be huge.

I can’t understand why live domestic events like AFL grand final, NRL grand final and State of Origin finals don’t experience declines like these games?
