The return of NRL saw Nine record its highest Thursday share of the 2020 survey so far. The 30.3% share was up almost 5 points from the previous week thanks to big wins for the network in Sydney and Brisbane. Nine also won in Melbourne with Seven ahead in Adelaide and Perth. Nine was also a winner in the key demographic groups.

MasterChef again topped the entertainment shows for the night, little changed from recent Thursday results. NRL was the top program in Sydney and Brisbane with a total audience over 500,000. This compared to games earlier in the year that rated below 400,000.

Most affected was Seven that shed three share points as the movie Crazy Stupid Love could only manage 34th place while Home and Away posted a season low. Meanwhile 10’s repeat Law and Ordder: SVU ranked 21st while ABC’s One Plus One also missed the top 20 in 23rd place with The Heights 35th.

It was also a good result over on Fox League with a 355,000 national audience.

The resumption of NRL season gave Nine a much needed Thursday win, and also sealed the week for the network.

Really?

Does NRL Thursday Footy not even air on 9Go, 9gem or 9Rush In the south and west?

9Gem

Why isn’t it included In the cumulative total?

Quite a bit concerning for Seven at 6:30 in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane as results go quite low.

At 6:00, Seven News Sydney and Brisbane appear unfazed at the revival of the NRL. However at 6:30, it signals lower results for Seven Sydney. Seven News Brisbane doesn’t trail off the gap but results shy off 200,000.

The results for Seven News Melbourne are somewhat shocking at 6:00, as Nine takes the lead, and even more at 6:30 as Seven only manages about 300,000. Melbourne doesn’t even have NFL!

In Adelaide, Nine News is constantly catching up with not bad results at 6:00. Seven News at 6:30 only managing just past 100,000.

After the NRL season was halted in late March, Nine had been mostly relying on RBT and repeat movies on Thursday nights. After winning on April 16, Nine’s next Thursday victory didn’t come until two weeks ago on May 14.

Ratings: Return of NRL boosts Nine to best Thursday win of 2020 survey

For some reason, Nine and SBS don’t “participate” in allowing OzTAM to merge programs that are on different channels for their networks.

Rating on 9Gem was 84,000.

It’s demos are shit and getting worse. They badly need BB to fire

They just feel so desperate

Their promos and Voice overs feel stale. Every time they are something like “bodyguard” they feel increasingly out of step with Australians

There is zero cool factor at seven

I’ve said before that they have a way of making shows that should appeal to a younger audience (both in terms of the shows production and promos) feel like they have been made by a group of 60 year olds who think they know what the youngsters like!

10000% agree!

Seven will have AFL back on Thursday Nights in 2 weeks. Numbers will be boosted.

What do you expect when all they serve up against Masterchef and NRL is triple episodes of an average rating drama and a movie?

I’ve said it before and said it again, Home and Away needs to get rid of 3 episodes on Thursdays. They need first-run program post-7.30 and they need to innovate and invest in new formats.

Agree with the fact that their promotion has been way off. Their promotion department needs an overhaul. I feel like I’m seeing the same style of promos I’ve seen on Seven since 2014. Might’ve been good then but we’re now in 2020 and the same stuff over and over is boring.
