Christmas Day ratings were generally higher across the board this year compared to last with Seven News topping the rankings with almost 800k – up 70k on last year while second ranked Nine News was up 90k.

A Current Affair won the 7pm slot with 646k ahead of ABC’s national 7pm bulletin 614k while Border Security - Australia’s Front Line had 320k (not broadcast in all markets).

ABC’s Royal Variety Performance 2025 did well with 463k to lead the movie offerings.

Nine’s National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation again won the Christmas movie battle ahead of Love Actually with both improved from last year to top 400k.

10’s The Dog House just made the top 30 after the afternoon’s MTV Greatest Hits ranked 22nd with a huge reach over its broadcast. 10 News was the network’s best performer and with over 300k was up +100k year-on-year.

10’s split schedule had NBL Round 14 in two markets that again missed the top 30 rankings.

Daytime viewing filled a large number of rankings including the encore of Carols In The Domain with 229k and the Carols By Candlelight Encore with 182k.

Later at night National Lampoon’s Vacation did well with 222k while Seven’s late movie Last Christmas had 165k.

The music block was technically a hit - pardon the pun - for 10.

It aired 8am to 12.30pm.

Maybe people put MTV block on TV in the background while entertaining their guests.

The Graham Norton Show missed the top 30.

I think Nine might run into a bit of trouble come end of week, as it looks like they have again forgot to code yesterday’s Carols separately to the live broadcast (previous years have seen them accidentally averaged until adjusted and drag the audience down).

Christmas Eve’s could otherwise go higher than 1.5m with timeshifting, vod and time correcting, as well as adding the encore for a cumulative.

I’d say so.. Rage did ok too on the ABC.

I wasn’t surprised to see MTV videos with a high reach figure but the average isn’t too bad as well. Worth considering in prime time next year?

Bit different running it as background noise to present opening etc earlier in the day vs prime time I would have thought

1.2 million viewers found it on 10 during the day with no promotion. A bit more effort for a hosted countdown might be worth a shot for an easy night’s viewing. Makes a change from the same 2 movies.

Thank you for posting the Christmas Day ratings. Always interesting to see the viewing patterns for the day.

Primetime was competitive at the 7.30(ish) mark - with ABC’s Royal Variety Performance, Seven’s Love Actually movie, and Nine’s National Lampoon Xmas Movie within 80k of each other in averages.

Always good to see what the various Carols and Pageants rate during the day for Seven and Nine.

The MTV Christmas Hits on 10 made a surprise appearance (that aired 8am-12.30pm). The reach was huge, The average was respectful

The NBL was shown in the 16-39 list. Reach was okay. Average was dreadful

Again, 10s none Christmas Day themed schedule tanked again.

It does not work. Every year this happens.

FFS, spend some money and buy some content from Disney next year.

10 had 6.5 hours of Christmas programming from 6am until 12.30pm (Jamie Oliver Specials, followed by MTV Christmas Hits which made the top 30).

At 6pm was the Kings Christmas Message (15minutes) and the Graham Norton Show (75 minutes) which I believe was their Christmas Special. With the NBL in some cities, perhaps they didn’t didn’t bother to air a Christmas Movie in some cities, which was a shame.

Quite remarkable that on one of the lowest rating overall nights of the year, it is one of the highest combined rating nights for movies (832k average for just Channel 7 plus Channel 9’s 7:30pm offerings).

Possibly Christmas night hosts turning TVs on and people find the lounge room or maybe for older kids as background entertainment.

Knoxy at TVT mentioned exactly this in his post this morning on it.

Also remember the weather in some cities was quite cool, even Sydney wasn’t a great summer day.

So perhaps that drive more people to switch the tv on.

What 10 should do is consider showing the NBL on 10 nationally, the MTV Countdown on 10 again in the morning next year and an ENCORE on either Nick/10 comedy at 7.30pm and maybe a Christmas movie following the NBL and we’re set.
