Without any reality show competition, MasterChef bounced back to it best audience since the opening episode on Monday. Combined with the best Gogglebox audience for six week that saw 10 record its highest Thursday share since September 2021. It also saw 10 win the key demos for the night.

Overall, Nine posted is first win of the week just one point ahead of Seven. ABC was up one while SBS lost one from the previous Thursday.

Home and Away that started the week so well slipped to just 387k for the ‘late’ episode. Meanwhile, Foreign Correspondent was up 60k for ABC.

Nine News Adelaide last night regained most of its viewers lost on Wednesday due to major technical problems.

You would think that MasterChef should have benefited more from less competition. Next week will be interesting to see if there were just less eyeballs on TV this short week, or if this week represents the sort of numbers that the current reality offerings are going to pull.

NB doing poorly in Brisbane despite the live broadcasts from Queensland this week.

Well let’s do some sort of small survey right here right now.

Instead of “the big three”, what did people here watch this week? Or did you not watch anything?

I watched the big three and B99 on Netflix.

Space Jam 2 on Foxtel Movies

Hot Seat Melbourne back ahead again. Viewers switch between both it seems not a whole heap of loyalty to one show.

There’s something seriously wrong with these sports numbers. I realise its simulcast, but there is only another 200,000 more via that
where has the audience for live sport gone?

What are the other 23/24 million Australians doing if they aren’t watching TV??

Perhaps Kayo that isn’t reported or 9Now.

Manly and Cronulla aren’t exactly popular teams or drawcards outside of Sydney.

Netflix or YouTube

Or having a life outside TV more likely.

I’m sure there are more people doing other things than watching TV every night.

Yes but what is that life? Surely people aren’t out at dinner every night or have an activity after work every night? What are millions of people doing at night?

Apart from going out for dinner, they could be at a club, playing or training for sport, exercising at the gym or outdoors, or at home playing board games, reading books, listening to music, watching YouTube or TikTok, gaming, studying, playing music, creating art.

The list is endless. I’m finding myself watching less and less television these days now that free to air mostly offers sludge in the form of reality television.

It’s nothing special though, even when there were massive TV events, most of the country wasn’t watching at least according to TV ratings.

If you take a random year 2011, The Block Winners’ Announcement that was the number one show with a metro audience of 3.37 million. That represented a TARP of 21.9% - ie percent of the potential viewing population - (that was 47% of people watching TV). The AFL final that year was 17% of the potential audience, State of Origin 14% etc.

I agree with you that people are doing all those activities you mention, but I struggle to believe that only approx. 2 mil of the Australian population are watching FTA in the evenings. Surely that number has to be higher.

Remember that the overnight ratings above are just for the 5 capital cities - no PVR, 7Plus or regional numbers included.
