10 have a clear plan with their multi’s and it’s showing for them.

10Bold with crime shows
10Peach sitcoms

A few more crime shows and comedies and they’ll start to look like FoxHits and FoxCrime.

Yeah its good to see 10 have that vision now.

Cricket seems to be working for 7 this season.
Wonder how it’ll fare once I’m a Celebrity starts, and then the tennis.

Great strategy. I applaud 10 for choosing to refocus their multichannel.

Once they are 110%, maybe a third multichannel?

Probably helps that Australia is back winning again so there is some positive flow on to the Big Bash. We all know Australian’s like to win or they lose interest.

10 News First 6pm had its best result yesterday, just missing the top 20.

The result was on a day that, despite the big news story, bulletin numbers were down from the same day last year for all networks.

This is positive news. Still not sure if I think its the best option for 10 and FTA tv in general but a positive sign for 10.

I think 10 is starting to improve in the leadup to I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here, which starts on Sunday. 10Bold had a very good night with drama and crime as well as documentaries. Channel 10 want to be more competitive at the start of the year.

10’s main channel managed to beat the ABC, but in a rare occurrence (even with 10 Bold’s massive share) lost to the ABC in network share with some big shares for ABC’s multi-channels (as well as one extra channel).

Do we know if they are beating Nine in Perth at 6?

No. They have not beaten Nine Perth at 6pm or come close to it in total people. However they did in the demos yesterday. In 25-54 it ranked 11th in Perth which meant it outranked every program shown on Nine in that city.

10 news first at 6 will be a slow grower

I can see it’s already hurt 9 and 7 At 6

Those 10 news viewers are not new people turning on the TV, they are viewers who used to go to 9 and 7 at 6 and are now happy to stay on 10

I hope they just leave it at let it sit all year. Slowly improve it.

Next they need a marketing push for 6
And I would go 6pm weekends too (national is fine) just so people can start to rely on 10 for news at 6 $ days week

Entertainment can go on hold and peach

That is the scary thing. Further diluting the already decreasing viewership of FTA. As network bosses have said the true competition is not the other FTA stations it’s streaming.

I personally think anything which can provide genuine competition to the ratings of Seven/Nine News at 6pm (something they haven’t had for a very long time) can only be a good thing.

Ten being “the alternative network” at 6pm might’ve been a very sound decision back in the days of only five main channels, but the landscape has changed heaps over the last decade or so.

Now there’s a whopping 20 FTA channels that are surveyed by OzTAM (even more when you take into consideration the datacasts, HD simulcasts and ABC/SBS radio services), we’d most likely still have plenty of 6pm alternative programming even if all five networks were to show a news bulletin at 6pm in their main channel! Similarly, with dedicated channels ABC KIDS & ABC ME now targeting the birth to teenage market it makes sense for the ABC to show News Breakfast on their main channel these days even though their early morning lineup was historically dominated by children’s programming.

Look I agree with all you said but the networks need to provide that alternative on the multi channels. At the moment its just repeats of game shows, sitcoms and lifestyle programs. If 10 can provide new content on Peach and/or Bold then I am all for it. But I do worry that 10 are just encouraging viewers to streaming. I am a prime example. I watched Celebrity Name Game. But I have no interest in News. Since they started airing news at 6pm I haven’t turned FTA on once at 6pm. I have watched Netfix and Stan instead.

@turdall but be careful to say “I do this therefore” your personal viewing habits do not reflect Australia

I would confidently guess that almost no one is streaming at 6pm

Aussies want news at 6pm

Streaming kicks in on weekends and post 830pm when FTA dies

And the money and return on investment just is not there. If 10 could not make celebrity name game work on the flagship channel at 6, it’s not gonna work on hold at 6 - in terms of ratings and and costs

Even in the massive USA market. Cable giants like FX, TNT USA etc are not running new content at 6. It’s repeats of NCIS JAG sitcoms modern family etc

Aussie networks over spend on reality shows. There is not a lot of money left for original content for 6pm on bold peach gem

The multis should have more original content and be more tightly programmed and branded

In the UK they use the multis more for re runs from the main channe

For example. You would be seeing Im a celebrity, master chef, giggle box, masked singer, 5 bedrooms, survivor etc - getting second plays at slots like 6pm, 7pm, 8pm and 9pm on bold and peach.

But the nets don’t seem to like that idea in Australia

Your confidence would be completely incorrect then.

@turdall it’s an educated guess. I’ve worked for TV networks for 18 years and see ratings from all Over the world. I’ve seen charts that show streaming peaks evenings and weekend days - but not “dinner time” IE - 5-8pm in most countries.

Have you seen data to suggest otherwise? All the data points ive seen show streaming is lowest early evenings
