Ratings: Australian Open gives Nine fourth straight win
#2

I thought the tennis might have done better given the results and the cricket worse given the abandonment. Again, neither could better the “celebrities” on Ten.

#3

Despite thr fact that Celebrity had another drop.

10’s still chugging along nicely with Celebrity but they wouldn’t want to drop anymore. Nine is steady with the tennis. Big Bash slightly better for Seven but still in floppy territory.

#4

Celebrity is doing really well against both sports.

Maybe Ten will ask OzTam to extend the official ratings period next year from 40 weeks to 50 weeks and program more first run shows in January.

#5

Yesterday’s play at the Australian Open didn’t finish until 3.12am AEDT this morning, giving Nine valuable late night shares especially in Perth.
Last year:
2018 AUSTRALIAN OPEN-NIGHT 4 804,000 (Ash Barty was playing)
2018 AUSTRALIAN OPEN-NIGHT 4-LATE 366,000

#6

Would they still make revenue from high rating shows like Celebrity even in non-ratings?

#7

Of course, if they can attract advertisers with the promise of ratings success (eg, large number of viewers) it doesn’t matter whether it’s an official ratings week or not.

#8

Big Bash did well in Brisbane and Sydney as they were the teams playing.
I know it would mean a split schedule but should 7 consider for 2019/20 season, putting games for the relevant cities on 7 and the other games on 7mate?
Or would non-sport programming do worse on the main channel?

#9

Probably. Look at the other nights of the week without cricket. <cough> MKR special <cough>

#10

It is a Thursday though. I would generally expect it to rate better earlier in the week and less later in the week. Thursday is typically a lower viewing night during the ratings season so you would think moreso at this point in summer. I am confident unless there is some major Tennis match against it that Sunday/Monday will go up a bit.

#11

Apparently Sunrise won by 80K yesterday.

#12

Big Bash doing better in the 16-39 demo than 40+ and total viewers, which is typically the opposite of Seven’s audience. Perhaps the bright spot for Seven, and might lead to a demo boost to H&A, MKR and The Good Doctor when they return.

#13

I just see it that the younger age bracket prefers sport to news.

#14

Seven don’t have infinite amounts of money to spend on entertainment content to air alongside sport they’ve spent massive amounts on.

#15

Can’t see it doing much for H&A since they’ve postponed it to the second half of Feb. It may help out MKR against Married.
Ten Network shares looking somewhat competitive. Should see a boost in consolidated too I would imagine

#16

Melbourne only watching the Aus Open and everything Nine, perhaps unsurprisingly…

Which is good for Nine, who already win the Sydney market, have NRL and even win Today Show.

Whereas they haven’t won Melbourne for 13 years, don’t have AFL and losing big to Sumeise. So perfect couple of weeks and then into Married for Nine Melbourne. Executives have been making it clear in articles their focus on changing Melb.

#17

H&A promos are still running hot during the cricket, even with a delayed start. Seven also have some more test cricket on the way which should attract a bigger audience.

I don’t think the BBL has been a disaster for Seven as some make it out to be. It skews young and male, brings to Seven an audience they don’t often get to sample their programming previews, and plenty of sponsors across multiple weeks. Seven are a bit unlucky in that the Aussie cricket team is in a bit of a slump at the moment - when the Aussies start winning again, there will be a halo affect around all cricket.

The AO will always do far better, but it is only a 2 week run and is far more susceptible to who is playing and how well they’re playing.

#18

Wouldn’t that require Seven & Nine to consent/agree to such a proposal considering they’re part owners of OzTam?

As much as I want the non-ratings period to be eliminated, I can’t see the status quo which the networks have seemingly been content with for so long changing

#19

Check out the numbers for shows outside the top 20

#20

If I can indulge for a moment… There have been some amazing matches on 9Gem in prime time so far, yet only Monday’s was able to pull a decent audience of 140k and over 4% share.
While the shares have been okay if not weak since, the actual ratings as provided by Cynic above don’t look good.

Which backs up what I’ve been saying and others online have noticed, that Nine for some reason are NOT promoting 9Gem or 9Now, at all!? So strange.
