Nine got a great result from game one of the Women’s State of Origin last night with 941k national viewers. That was up to 300k higher than game one of 2023. Nine reported that was a 46% Total TV increase helping Nine’s share to lift 2 points from the previous week to a 14-week Thursday high.

However, it wasn’t enough to knock Seven out of first place with the network winning with a three point margin. Seven was down three from last week while ABC, 10 and SBS were on par with last week’s shares.

Home and Away was the top primetime entertainment show while the AFL averaged 561k, down 90k for Seven.

ABC’s night featured the Opposition Budget Reply and Foreign Correspondent that was up this week. Britain By The Book premiered at just 259k in a slightly later timeslot. .

10’s top program was a repeat of The Dog House Australia, down 40k from Jamie’s Air Fryer Meals with another top 30 spot for Deal or No Deal at the 300k mark.

Another good result for Nine News, with the gap closing to 175k nationally.

Pretty impressive numbers for the Women’s State of Origin.

Deal or No Deal is doing wonders for 10 at 6pm.

292,000 against 1.3m and 1.1m is wonders for 10?

Why is the bar always set so low for this network?

Cause its doing 100k more than what the 6pm portion of the News was doing a year ago, and is regularly making the top 30, compared to the 6pm News

Could have something to do with the series now exclusively live on Nine (last year’s series was also shown live on Fox League).

Sunrise and Today ties on Thursday. Today winning all east coast. Sunrise underperforms in Melbourne, ranked third and lower than Brisbane’s audience though Melbourne numbers for all three are soft…

I swear they were getting 900k or around that this time last year across the hour, this seems quite a severe drop

Correct - Seven News average for hour on 18/05/24 was 905,500; Nine was 728,500

Not surprising given nobody in Victoria even knew the game was on last night. I looked through the Herald Sun sports pages and there was zero mention of the game.

Timeslot is up 26% on previous year, and doing well in the demos.

Regularly builds an audience from the news, is well produced, and offers an alternative at that time.

It is also highly repeatable, has been sold to overseas territories (NZ) and signals an investment and push into the 6pm space.

I think it’s just having realistic views about what is possible in an incredibly challenging timeslot.

I guess it lives and dies on the ad sales

Also note, that while DOND has improved the timeslot, overall news numbers are lower.

Womens Origin had the highest average FTA rating of any NRL/NRLW or AFL game so far this season. The 46% increase on FTA audience more than making up for the lack of Foxtel coverage this season.

lol so if you balance it out there has been no real change or growth in the 5-7:30pm slot?

I was referring to the news numbers in the timeslot for especially 7 being lower.
