The AFL returned with a massive audience of over one million viewers with 668,000 of those in Melbourne. That helped give Seven its best Thursday audience of the year and second best result of 2020 so far. The 36.6% share compared to the Thursday of round one AFL when Seven had a 33% share.

Most affected was ABC, that recorded the public broadcaster’s lowest overnight share of the year. The NRL on Nine was up slightly from the previous week. MasterChef held onto 875,000 of its audience but was down almost 100,000 from the previous Thursday. Celebrity Gogglebox USA debuted fairly well against tough competition.

Just over 1 million for the return of AFL last night even though it ended in a low scoring draw. Has to be the biggest home and away FTA audience in recent years. EDIT: Seven said it was the biggest regular primetime match in a decade.
Seven did very well in Melbourne, leading from 6pm to 10.30pm.
MasterChef and Miss Scarlet and the Duke (on 7TWO) held up well against the footy, but Celebrity Gogglebox USA had an average debut.

Wow, those AFL figures for Melbourne are huge. Considering the extended contract, savings on the current deal and those figures I’d say 7 would be very happy.

By comparison, those NRL figures look very ordinary. Is this on par with audiences before Covid-19? Nine’s multi’s looking ordinary too.

MasterChef did pretty well to hold up against the competition, also surprised that Celeb Gogglebox launched fairly well but I doubt it will be able to sustain those figures in the earlier timeslot next week.

Huge figures for the AFL!

Especially in Sydney. Masterchef well above in that market.

AFL better a find a way to fix their product if they want the viewers to come back tonight. I’m a Richmond fan and that was one of the worst games in living memory.

Shows how much we’ve missed sport! I bet there were people watching who didn’t normally follow AFL but they just needed a live sport fix. Shame about the score though…

What didn’t you like about it?

AFL 668,000 in Melbourne
NRL 195,000 in Sydney

Sydney is a slightly bigger Tv market

That’s a 3:1 smack down

What are you talking about?
I get it that the skill level wasn’t there, due to the players being off for 2 months. But come on it wasn’t that bad.

WTF? They’ve had almost no training and there’s shortened quarters during the game. It’s remarkable games are even being played. Jeez.

Per market:

Nine won Sydney and Brisbane with +30% shares
Seven won AFL markets, with Melbourne almost reaching 50%.

Network 10 was second in the AFL markets; in Sydney and Brisbane 10’s main channel beat Seven’s.

Seven won the key demos while 10 was second.

Seven’s Police: Hour Of Duty (and the movie that followed) failed to make the top 20 in Sydney or Brisbane.

From Nine
9News was the most watched program of the night across the East Coast and was the No.2 program of the night in Sydney.

A Current Affair was a timeslot winner across the East Coast and in Sydney and Brisbane.

Thursday Night NRL Live was a timeslot winner in Brisbane.

Wow at those massive ratings for the AFL on Seven in Melbourne! You really have to ask how come Nine can’t get anywhere near those sorts of figures for a regular season game of NRL in Sydney at the moment?

For starters: The Broncos are scheduled every single week on a Thursday or Friday night and they have been woeful this year.

Very good figures for the AFL and Seven must be ecstatic. Now they need to pump out the promos for BB, their drama Between Two Worlds, Fam Time and other shows that will come after BB so they can get some decent exposure before they air. With AFL on for the rest of this week, Seven should easily win this week in TP and demos.

Nine and 10 both held up alright, the ABC falters against heavy competition. It’s back to the drawing board for the national broadcaster on Thursday nights, they haven’t rated well on Thursdays at all in recent times.

how good is the AFL ! 1 million on thursday ! BEST ratings for a home and away match in a decade.

It will just be interesting to see how other games rate now. Round 1 had quite a big figure as well. But the Friday night match saw a bit of a drop.

So just when you think it’s all over for 7News in Brisbane for 2020, they score 2 decent wins in 2 nights, and with 9 beating them before and after the news.
Brisbane audiences all over the place.
