The Morning Show

Despite the tweaks to the Sunrise graphics to lessen the on screen footprint of graphics , no changes for TMS so far.

Natarsha Belling is in studio this morning.

Also starting to see pre-recorded infomercials out of the new studios.

Monday (11.09.2023) - Wednesday (13.09.2023): Matt Doran still hosting.

Just throwing a theory out there… Could Doran perhaps become a permanent replacement for Larry Emdur, if all parties including the network agreed, as to let Emdur focus on The Chase (especially with what should be fierce competition on the way in February) and given that’d surely in the network, Larry and his manager’s mind be Larry’s main gig by a long way now? The only reason I can see Larry still doing TMS as well is for his continuing longevity with Kylie Gillies and the rapport and chemistry they’ve now long-had. And yes this would cause ramifications for Weekend Sunrise as well. But Doran’s clearly got chemistry with Gillies too and he’s a good fit for TMS too. In Larry’s case, TMS not exactly top-rating, major stuff, at least these days, despite the effort put into the show, especially this year with new producers and set/graphics. But as I said, just a theory.

Continuing today. I noticed that in Monday’s ratings Today Extra was just 4k behind TMS

I may be in the minority, but I personally think its time to wrap up the Morning Show and launch something new. Whenever I catch it now I just find it Tired and stale (even with the new set/gfx). I personally would replace it with a new show very much styled on NBC’s 3rd Hour of Today. Bring in a set of hosts, say, Matt Doran, Shaun White & Katie Brown for instance and style it on a discussion around the day’s news. Perhaps even consider bringing in a studio audience. And lean heavily into viewer interaction. Just my 2c but thats what I would do.

Starting in 2007, and now in its 17th year, it has had an amazing run. A ratings winner overall. This year has been alot closer with Nine’s Today Extra, but not worrying signs… yet.

Curiously, on aversge, how often does Larry host the show per week?

If I’m not mistaken, this show has never lost a metro ratings week (unsure of metrics used)? @TV.Cynic

Why would you axe the number 1 morning show?

I recall Today Extra winning one week in March 2016.

Yesterday, TMS was less than 1,000 ahead of Today Extra while for the last 30 minutes Today Extra was +3,000 ahead, remembering that Larry was away.

Correct, Mornings won week 12 by 3,000. It was a time when Today was beating Sunrise as well.

That’s madness. Not everyone wants more news especially at that time of day.

Larry and Kylie have been a ratings juggernaut for 17 years. Ratings drop every time Larry or Kylie are away. The replacements like Matt Doran are obviously less popular.

Seven keep saying in media releases about TMS never losing ratings or something, they must be referring to national? If so, they never said as such with Sunrise, so Today must’ve beaten them nationally before?

That didn’t last long.
