Ten News First Content and Appearance

Great to see. Hopefully an upwards trend continues throughout this year.
Shame we don’t have the 5-city breakdown right now.

Last night, Sydney peaked at 75,000 the highest of all cities, followed by Melbourne at 71k, Brissy at 45k, Adelaide at 38k, and Perth at 48k.

All cities expect for Adelaide peaked at the start of the news which means people could have tuned in for the latest on the bushfires in California.

Good to see 10’s news gradually building up again after reinvestment in dedicated local bulletins and a period of some stability. I do wonder about Perth though… numbers seem to be worse than a few years ago and that’s had the most ‘local’ product albeit partly from Sydney.

Considering 10 did little to no publicity when the broadcast returned to being presented from Perth, those numbers are good. There have been several occasions where Perth has outperformed Brisbane in ratings, despite Brisbane receiving significant attention with Sharyn joining the team. Perth was in the mid 50s last month several times.

They would have been disappointed in Brisbane where 2 local stories preceded the LA Fire coverage  . There was a 2nd report later with Ashley Sharp from CBS.

Good to see most of the sport with better picture quality

Much needed upgrade. Looked shocking before.

Important to remember that numbers are also up due to the game shows on the other networks being in repeat mode.

It would be great if 10 could maintain these numbers through the months ahead.

BTW these were the 5-city number on this Thursday last year without BVOD

184,000 46,000 55,000 33,000 16,000 34,000

Similar situation applied last year though when the bulletin rated 60k lower.

The competition last year:

The Chase 613,000 in 2024 - 549,000 last night
Hot Seat 387,000 in 2024 - 635,000 last night

This week averaged 344,600 national viewers. Just three weeks have rated higher since the start of the new ratings reporting system. They were all in the peak viewing winter months.

What do we put this down to?

LA Fire Coverage?
Games shows on repeat mode?
Reinstatement of Sydney / Brisbane editions?
New national bulletins generating positive awareness in the news brand?

With all due respect, would the average viewer know that game shows are in repeat mode? I don’t think many will remember any specific episodes unless they were on an episode or it only aired a day or two ago. To them it will just be a regular episode.

But I might be wrong though, and am happy to be corrected

People out of routine still - it’s only been the first week of the new year. So, they’re not in their commute patterns etc.

Once people get back to work properly (this week, maybe next), I’d be surprised if they don’t drop.

I’ve worked out the equivalent national figure for this week last year to 310,000.

I’d go with three of those four. Takes a long time to build something, hopefully finally paying off.
