Ten Network - Programs and Schedules

Just going back to this if I may.

I’ve just noticed the last 2 seasons (24&25) are currently in the top 5 purchased TV shows on Apple TV (previously iTunes).

I think that says a lot and there’s definitely interest in the show still.

People are willing to purchase current seasons rather than wait years for them on Prime Video.

This makes me so angry.

American shows get priority with a first run on 10 in a a prime slot but Australian shows get a second run on 10 and are shunted to a later slot.

I really think they have their priorities the wrong way around here. They are doing a disservice to Australian scripted programs (or any Australian shows for that matter) by putting them on Paramount+ first and much later.

Nine are doing the same thing with Stan and their Australian dramas too.

Streaming is the future and networks want viewers to move there so that’s where the quality programming will be now.

I’m sure if 7 had a streaming service it would be doing the same thing.

It is what it is unfortunately.

FTA as a whole will become the new multichannel. Sloppy seconds and cheap content.

Edit: actually, I’ve just realised that Matlock is due on P+ on Tuesday 5 November meaning it’ll premiere on 10 first. That’s new. All of the other US shows have been on P+ for weeks streaming same day as the US. I wonder why they’re treating Matlock differently?

100% spot on. It also makes me angry, and disappointed, with FTA.

Should have swapped around with Matlock - or at least air it on Wednesdays, where it had been for a number of seasons with a mostly better timeslot.

And of course 10 have been advertising Matlock, but i have not seen a single ad for Five Bedrooms. Just shows how little they care about local drama content. And then they wonder why no one watches Australian Drama on FTA these days.

10 going back to weekend family classics and seems Disney are happy licencing to all networks now as well as other svod services, let alone protecting Disney Plus gone out the window for $$$…

Recall Seven running it last around 2013 and pretty sure Nine also aired it around 2019. There’s been the remake since then too.

I understand that streaming is the future but I’m concerned that the current strategy is failing Australia programs. I am suspecting that debuting Australian shows on a streaming service and then shown later on free to air (if ever), means that these shows are just not reaching a large audience.

Whenever I’ve discussed Aussie shows with family and friends in the past, I’ve often found someone who has been watching something I watch. I can’t remember the last time anyone I know has watched an Australian drama anywhere. They are not often drawn to them on streaming services.

If audiences are not finding Australian programs, the danger is that they will become an afterthought and won’t have a future at all.

Exactly. Why is this show being prioritised?

In my opinion, this is what should be happening with Australian shows.

Premiere them on 10 and put them on Paramount+ same day. Give them maximum exposure on both. American shows can be on Paramount same day as overseas and then on 10 whnever possible.

I’m pretty sure it’s been mentioned before they don’t and can’t do this as they’re different commissions from different sections of the company.

Well, they need to rethink it.

If Paramount+ can’t make an Australian show a hit in Australia, then what hope is there of making it a hit in an international market?

They need to promote and create maximum buzz.

Who says they aren’t making hits?

I’m pretty sure Last King of the Cross has been sold internationally.

Also hasn’t Fake done well? Didn’t it break records on the platform?

NCIS Sydney has also gone international too.

I think Aussie drama is doing really well on streaming.

Heartbreak High is another example of an Aussie Drama doing well overseas on streaming (albeit on Netflix).

A lot more flops though.

And FTA hasn’t had plenty of Aussie flops too?

I’d like to see some stats that show that Streaming shows are reaching a wider audience.

And Colin from Accounts and The Twelve on Binge.

Australian drama is actually doing pretty well if you think about it more.

Wouldn’t we all? However, I don’t think they release numbers unfortunately.

What we do know for sure, however, is they don’t rate, therefore, don’t reach audiences on free to air. That is known for certain.

Along with comedy - Fisk ended up being one of the top 10 shows in the second week it was on Netflix in the United States.

I don’t think there is anything on Australian data unless it’s from the companies themselves (i.e. Netflix’s top 10 most watched shows, etc):

Boy Swallows Universe is another.

Come to think of it Australian scripted content is having a great year on streaming.

And Territory just launched on Netflix.

Most of these shows wouldn’t exist without these streamers so I think they’re in a pretty good place right now.

And the networks wonder why people stop watching FTA apart from news and sport

Correct. I definitely think drama has found its place in Australia and won’t return to any FTA highs.
