This is the game in which James Hird kicked the match winning goal before hugging a fan near the boundary fence.

[https://www.espn.com.au/afl/story/\_/id/39817128/afl-essendon-james-hird-hugging-fan-round-3-2004-west-coast-eagles](https://www.espn.com.au/afl/story/_/id/39817128/afl-essendon-james-hird-hugging-fan-round-3-2004-west-coast-eagles)

I was living in Hong Kong during most of 2004 so I missed seeing the match. However I heard the story of Hird’s heroics many times after I returned to Australia in November 2004, and this is the first opportunity I get to see the broadcast myself, so thanks for posting the link.

Full match coverage of the round 10, 2005 match between St Kilda and the Sydney Swans played at (what was then known as) Telstra Dome.

Of course, this was the match in which Network Ten’s commentators were very scathing of the Swans’ dreadful performance that ultimately proved to be a turning point in their season. This is also documented in the Seven doco _Shaking Down the Thunder_ last year.

This is the only Grand Final on Ten that saw the lead change after the 5-minute warning was activated (Joel Selwood’s miss was registered after it was activated). The other seven didn’t see a lead change (not even those 2005 or 2006 Sydney vs West Coast classics).

As you say, the conclusion to this year’s AFL Grand Final would’ve been very dramatic had the 5-minute warning been activated.

Stephen Quartermain was a good host/caller, listen to some of his calls especially during finals. It was so much better than Bruce on 7 during the 2007-2011 era. I would add Huddo in their too and Tim Lane. Quarters and Huddo really cemented themselves with the 2005 finals, that was some of the best calling I’ve heard.
