Tapt Radio (Talk)

In my view that’s a much better use of Clinton’s skills. Congratulations Clinton.

wrong… ATN is often based, depending on the market, within the state gov transport ops centres or have access to private and public CCTV cameras from various providers.

NTN was google maps and second hand info, or reading tweets from the feeds of said state gov media feeds…

question from an outsider who has no idea how radio newsrooms work, how much money is to be saved by shaving a few minutes off the midday bulletin?

I hope that 3AW Drive is next in Tapt’s sights. I understand that Jacqui has cut-through on social media, but the ratings are horrible and embarrassing to the station. Not to mention she has so much time off, along with her commercial agreements that can get in the way of journalistic integrity. Is she a radio host who has sponsorships as side hustles, or an influencer whose side gig is radio?

Good chat between Steve Price and Tony Tardio on the current state of 3AW, including how news is networked out of Sydney on weekends. That needs to change. It can’t be that expensive to pay a local reader to do Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Matt Granland hosted Sports Today on 3AW all this week, while Jimmy Bartel fronted breakfast.

It probably would make sense given 3AW at least in the winter broadcast the AFL so they would only broadcast a few.bulletins between 12pm and 6pm on weekends but yes it should come from Melbourne. Maybe do the opposite or rotate so sometimes the news comes out of Melbourne or Sydney every other week.

Maynard replaces Penny Ghosn, who has been appointed head of digital growth, maximising “reach, engagement and commercialisation” according to a Tapt press release. 2GB Drive with James Willis and Money News with Clinton Maynard both start next Monday, October 5.

Clinton Maynard pulled off 2GB Drive, appointed news director in Tapt switcheroo

Would’ve been a great idea to put a female in the spot…you know, to avoid the whole “old white men” and “sausage fest” stereotype. Even if it is Lucy Zelic.

Just saying…

In the case of 3AW, the reports over the last several years have actually provided by Transport Victoria. Hot off the press if you will. They also do 774 ABC.

Tapt radio has really ‘tapt’ out of local, breaking news overnight.

Sizable earthquake occurred in Victoria at 2am AEST. It was covered, thankfully, on the live overnights program with calls taken. But then no mention on the 3am, 4am or 5am news bulletins, due to them being pre-recorded.

It’s pretty disgraceful.

In those cases you’d be correct. In Perth ATN is based within Mainroads WA, access to a lot of resources that NTN didnt have beyond I think mainroads comms emails.

I know in Victoria, ATN used to have a reporter based at the old VicRoads TMC in Kew during AM and PM peaks (ATN base and chopper was at Essendon Airport and admin was up in the Rialto Towers). To provide on the spot latest from CCTV and incident feeds coming in and emergency services.

However, that was like over a decade ago. Not sure if that’s still the case.

VicRoads also used to provide communications to them (as part of that relationship regardless, I’d guess that’d still be happening. As ATN surely cannot just rely on Google Maps, etc and Transport Victoria’s social media posts to the public, if they’re a commercial and seemingly premium service.

It was pretty convenient and lucky Transport Victoria set-up their own traffic reporting arm as part of their media team, came at the right time for 3AW.

ATN have had no working relationship with VicRoads/DTP since 2020. They lost access to the Traffic Management Centre.

Since then they’ve relied on the same resources that you and I could access - Google maps, VicTraffic socials and until this week listening to the 3AW reports. That’s why the new reports on 3AW lack the detail of what Transport Vic were supplying.

But I think I saw someone on here say they prefer that vagueness of a shopping list of breakdowns so maybe there’s others that think the same.

without getting too off-topic, I apologise

That is interesting.

ATN used to have access to the emergency services feed of motor vehicle accidents when they’d come in, AFAIK this is handled separately outside of Transport Victoria (who’d also require/need their own access to it). Wonder if they’re still getting those? As that’d provide the bulk of basic accident location information, without the detail from CCTV cameras, incident response, etc.

There’s also “VicTraffic”, which I wouldn’t exactly call social media, the platform (website and formerly an app) where all official road alerts are first posted by Transport Victoria. The X account just auto posts the links and Facebook both just use that name.

Also, VicTraffic alerts pop-up 24/7, even 2am on a Sunday morning. So that is clearly an operator in the Transport Operations Centre, who’s also trained to post to that site as well whenever an incident is detected or reported. ATN would also always use this I’d imagine.

But yeah that is a little concerning for accuracy and transparency if, only as one state’s example, DTP have severed any proactive working relationship with ATN. Shows you just how much ATN has fallen from its peak era. I remember an old ATN video on YouTube or something from many years ago that showed the old VicRoads TMC and its manager talking about ATN and how they also help them identify issues on the network. I’d guess thanks to the helicopter they had and before their CCTV network became as prolific as it is today.

Why do we even allow privately run traffic monitoring operations in the first place?

Should be provided by the state government to all media organisations as a public service. Like the BOM is.

If only everything was that easy at Tapt … like securing the trademark rights to its new name.

Just last week, Tapt Media’s lawyers filed a statement with the Federal Court outlining the “genuine steps” billionaire pub baron Arthur Laundy’s new talkback radio plaything had taken to resolve an ongoing legal dispute over the intellectual property rights to the Tapt brand.

Melbourne-based digital business card start-up Tapt by Hatch – which trademarked the words “Tapt” and “Tapped” more than four years ago – launched legal proceedings about Tapt Media last month after the radio outfit applied to have its IP claim revoked for non-use.

While road agencies monitor traffic, they’ve never done it for the purpose of reporting - it’s done to ensure they can effectively manage their networks.

The democratisation of data in this space has seen them get involved to ensure the availability of authoritative data for incidents, but that is often limited in scope.

There is a lot of juggling and multi tasking involved in real time media monitoring and the reporting / broadcast side of it can only be so much. So I agree it does require having a specific reporting role to be there. Often these teams work in liaison anyway

Simon Owens mentioned on-air last night that 3AW will be moving into new studios in a year’s time. He said that staff have been notified of the new address.

The new Sydney news bulletins on weekends and traffic reports are truly horrendous on 3AW.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s been many complaints sent it. Wonder how station management and Tom Malone/Tapt/Laundromat might respond, perhaps not entirely aware either.

For one example, yesterday at midday, the entire bulletin was Nsw-based news, 3/4 of which was about the Roosters v Knights NRL Grand Final. While the traffic reports, barely 15sec long, just mentioned a couple of street closures, roadworks and some flashing amber traffic lights (not a single mention of freeway traffic or main road incidents or any accidents or even PT - which I checked and there were some - and until last week Transport Victoria’s arm had provided).
