Might have quietly put the prices up knowing the surcharge change was coming…

You could be right there. A few others had a big price hike this year so they might have done the same.

But a coffee normally $5 should only go up to $5.05 and if for what reason it costs you more than that change providers you get no rewards for loyalty nowadays

They could charge more than that as a surcharge. Even though this cafe never advertised the surcharge anywhere, it was on the screen when you tapped to pay.

I know this cafe was charging me $1.5% because it was $10.15 for two coffees on screen and in my bank statement. I usually paid by cash unless I had forgotten my wallet at home.

At least you looked at the screen and bank statement. Sadly, most don’t. And don’t realise about the surcharges being added to their accounts.

While most coffee shops won’t increase their prices yet, I reckon they will by years end. But hopefully by 10c or so, not 50cent or more.

But that would be because other items have also gone up not just because of the surcharge. It’s likely many suppliers will introduce surcharges due increases in transport costs which would be harder to obsurb the costs of rather than 5 or 10 cents additional due to not being able to pass on the surcharge.

The Australian Taxation Office has now banned credit card payments for tax bills, effective from November 30.

Ban auto tips , surcharges, tap fees , sure it will take time for the market to settle, but these extra charges that normal people pay while the banks etc post massive profits? Not good it’s the wrong way around.

I noticed that NAB eftpos machines for at least the last month changed the screen saver to a message about it. Which a lot of small businesses especially cafes that I’ve been to use NAB

A few quick points on things I’ve seen…

  • The Reject Shop at Macquarie Centre has reopened, and its just about all Dollarama inside except for the outside. I think once the Dollarama brand is rolled out in Australia all they’d have to do is fix the outside. Also, AFL trophy fragrances on sale for $5. Got mine and put a Swans logo on it.
  • Half of the escalators at Westpoint Blacktown are out of action and have been for weeks…are the new owners not doing proper maintenance work?
  • People in Western Sydney are fucking pigs. They leave clothes everywhere and makes it hard to find the shirt I want. Kmart and Big W in Blacktown and Kmart in Mt Druitt are amongst the worst.

Saw a FB post that Target Carlingford closed its doors today.

JB Hi-Fi faces landmark legal action in the Supreme Court with eight million Australians potentially eligible for compensation. The electronics retailer is accused of selling worthless warranties to customers over a 12-year period from January 2011 to December 2023. Maurice Blackburn lawyers argue the trial will determine whether JB Hi-Fi sold customers rights they already possessed free under Australian consumer law.

Australians should be braced for more supermarket checkout pain as Woolworths dramatically increases a fuel levy across the board. The rise has been a flow-on effect from the war in the Middle East, which has led to much higher fuel prices than Australians are used to.

The supermarket chain’s fuel levy charged by its truck drivers to food and grocery suppliers has almost tripled since the war began and is now sitting at a record high. It’s expected suppliers will look to cut their own costs to counteract the higher levy, but it’s also likely inevitable that customers will bear some of the price pain if the levy stays elevated.

Oddly I have seen products from NZ drop in price such as Pics Peanut Butter and Much Moore Icecream and also Mainland Cheese 500g all at Woolies for some reason

Mainland dropped 80cents

Much Moore went from $11 down to $7.80

Pics peanut butter went from $7.50 to $6.75

The Peanut Butter dropped at Coles to $7 and Mainland was still $11.80 at Coles last i checked.

Also the Coles app and website is down still !

The Reddy Express service station right outside Forest Hill Chase shopping centre in Melbourne’s east is being converted into a self service station, with a new Picknpay Kiosk. I am not sure if it will operate as an independent or if it is linked to one of the service station operators.

I took three photos on my way to home this afternoon.

Has anyone seen inside a U-GO? I wonder if the shelves are all still in there or if they’re empty.

I knew things had been bad at DJs but it sounds like things are not flash under the hood.

One thing is clear though, the next 6-12 months isn’t going to be a boom period for a retailer like this.

Shopping centre owners are keeping David Jones under close watch as it battles vicious retail conditions and a stubborn debt pile but they may only face a short-term hit if the once blue-chip chain stops trading.
That’s the view of JPMorgan real estate analysts and industry experts who are assessing the once shocking prospect that the venerable department store chain may stop trading.

There is a U-GO at Glen Waverley. The building (which used to be an Ampol convenience store) is all boarded up.

Yeah that’s what I mean. Are they empty and stripped out? I’d assume not?

It stays empty. It can’t be demolished because it supports the canopy.
