Supermarkets and Retail

I suppose that’s the Walmart strategy isn’t it? A Walmart in every shopping centre in every town.

Great for Kmart.

It’s weird going to shopping centres that don’t have a Kmart. Doesn’t feel right. If I go to Big Dub I’ll always go to the book section - that’s one area they’ve got right (and arguably they do on par with Kmart). But everything else is just so daggy and over-priced compared to the Kay.

So yeah. Kmart Group could takeover Big Dub. Increase the footprint and reduce the competition.

really don’t know what they can do with BIGW

Selling to Wesfarmers would be the worst case scenario. Realistically if Big W keeps plummeting, I don’t think anyone would be interested in taking over. Will probably end up the same way as Masters and just have their stores replaced by several mini Rebels, JB Hi Fis, etc.
Maybe an international retailer would take it over? Big W has basically been an Australian Walmart clone.

TK Maxx?

its known the waltons have there eye on australia as an expansion option…

Shoppers in Brisbane have been caught out after discovering that some Kmart stores have introduced coin-operated trolleys.

The budget retailer has started to roll out this change across stores in Queensland, with approximately a third of Kmart stores in the state now having locked trolleys.

Locations where coin-operated trolleys have been spotted include Capalaba, North Lakes, and Stafford in South East Queensland.

The new trolleys can be unlocked with a $1 or $2 coin, which is returned to the customer once the trolley is secured back into the in-store trolley bay.

It is understood that this change is mainly due to councils implementing new requirements regarding trolley containment systems.

Who carries coins anymore?

Opportunity to sell a $2 sized coin-subtitle for $5. Anko-branded of course.

I literally only use a ‘coin’ for a trolley. I buy the Aldi tokens now and leave them on my keys. Its annoying though when a trolley eats the token and you can’t get it back.

I use the Aldi one too. Also, sometimes they are given away as corporate branded gubbins at certain places. Look out for them.

As I say to kids, if you know where to look steal all the free pens and water bottles you can at expos.

The Casula store has had coin locked trolleys for quite awhile now so is it really new?

A lot of stores do it in certain areas but not everywhere. Probably where the council has complained about too many unattended trolleys on the street.

Thr supermarkets in my area have all introduced it and there has been a reduction in abandoned trolleys.

Same. although i had a lost trolley across the road from my house yesterday so maybe not :grimacing:

Unfortunately still ways around it. You only need something the size as a 1 or 2 dollar coin and it works. This is what the Aldi trolleys are like so I’m not sure whether the other supermarkets have better versions that prevent this.

Yeah it’s definitely limited the amount of stolen ones.

When i visited a Coles in an apartment block in Westmead they had trolley locks so you physically could not take the trolley outside of the car park.

I think it’s a better approach but I remember shopping at Bondi and purchased some heavy items and put them in a trolley to take to my car which was parked in the Westfield and I made my purchases from a smaller shopping centre nearby that didn’t have a free parking period unlike the Westfield didn’t realise the trolley would lock so I had to carry the items anyway.

Speaking of trolley lock, it was introduced at Woolworths in basement one of QV complex in Melbourne CBD when the store opened a decade ago, so that trolleys could not be taken up to the ground level. They could be taken down to basement car park (B2 and below) however.

I still don’t know why they don’t do this at the major supermarkets where I am. People do their shopping then just dump the trolly in the car park or you find trolleys stolen and dumped in parks.

Word is getting out that the Coles Belmont store flagged for redevelopment at 162a High St won’t begin until after Xmas. A temporary reprieve for the tiny “BI-LO” Store. Come the start of 2026 it’s game over for the old store. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Fashion retailer, Ally has collapsed.
