I’ve heard that there may be another round of store closures for Myer too - hearing that some spaces they’re occupying are being shopped around
Myer probably needs to close some but reopen others. I don’t think shrinking their way to success is a great idea. Online is very low margin so they need to keep the focus on stores, just not so big though.
They need to be in the big capitals, and the big trading centres. I think stores like Launceston, Mackay, Dubbo are relatively pointless. Ballarat likely also. Bendigo is a big trading store from memory.
Myer have never used space in store well. DJs also. However I am aware of the challenges with landlords and reducing, what DJs did at Highpoint worked well though.
Myer Bendigo probably needs a renovation. I visited the store a couple of years ago after I saw an exhibition at the nearby Art Gallery, and the store seemed to be stuck in the 1990s.
I think most of the Myer regional sites are like that. I recall Ballarat wasn’t in great condition.
Which Myer last had a big refurbishment? Cairns?
Not for the customer though. The store is terrible now. Hardly anything in there. Feels like a Target Country.
Well worked well for the landlord I guess.
Yeah I went to Ballarat Myer about five years ago and it seemed dated. Staff were great though and I actually purchased a few things!
I always find the staff and service at Myer to be very good when I go into their stores. Particularly the Melbourne CBD store.
I made a song using Chat GPT for lyrics and Suno to make the song about Woolies and Coles with their high prices
‘The frozen peas are cold’.
I was quite impressed when I first came to Australia back in the 80s just how proud Australians were of their supermarket duopoly. People used to hate Franklins, always whinging and moaning - but loved the great Australians. I giuess it all comes down to sentimentality and what you grew up with.
That’s really quite good!
AI definitely the way of the future with advertising, and eventually TV and movies.
Yeah I agree. Great for small little tin-pot media outlets and little Ma & Pa businesses. Everyone can sound professional now. AI is the great equaliser.
AI sucks and that song is awful.
Bunnings confirmed to Yahoo that new laws have resulted in the implementation of “several changes” to stores in Queensland.
The Queensland government recently introduced new laws that ban the sale of knives to minors and require retailers to securely store controlled items. The laws, which came into effect on September 1, are designed to reduce the accessibility of certain items to young people and deter violent crime.
Prohibited items include knives, daggers with a double-edged blade, knives with blades at both ends, but also include items such as machetes, axes, sickles, scythes, spear guns, spears, replica firearms including gel blasters that are also replica firearms, and any other bladed item prescribed by regulation. Some knives, such as those made from plastic or with a rounded end, are exempt.

Colesworth suck and are terrible but I’m still thankful Australia hasn’t been taken over by Big Box Retailers similar to America’s Walmart, Target, Best Buy, etc. The combination of that and online have really killed a lot of their retail industry specifically in malls. Would hate to see the same ever happen here.
We did briefly have Super Kmart in the 80s (and I think planned in the late 00s) but I guess it was too expensive and confusing for customers to run.
Only a few years ago Westfield Parramatta would be open 24 hours on the last Thursday night before Christmas. Not anymore ![]()
Renewed the lease in 2022 IIRC and with that completed refurbishments of the store this year. Lot nicer now.
Highpoint will open from 9am to 2am next Monday (December 23), then will take a few hours break and reopen at 9am on Tuesday (Christmas Eve) before closing at 6pm.
Chadstone will open from 8am to midnight next Monday, and from 8am to 6pm on Tuesday.
Both complexes used to have 24 hour trading from December 23 to 24. Not anymore.
