Supermarkets and Retail (2015-2025)

yeah in the last 10 or so years i have been wondering what was targets market segmentation.

it used to be a mid market store - higher than K-Mart but lower than say Myer or David Jones. but now its basically a fancier looking kmart. i know my local shopping centre has both a Target and a Kmart. I expect one to go at some point

Just popped into my local Coles and I see they have installed LCD screens on the top of some of their endcaps to highlight the pricing. It was only on 3 or 4 ends and the rest still had the traditional “tri-shaped” signage, so I’m not sure if maybe it is a trial?

My local Woolworths has gone completely electronic ticketing but I haven’t seen the ends done though, they are still printed signs.

Digital ticketing and marketing in store is big business, screens and digital signage are the future. My local Woolworths just got the new health and beauty layout and they have big tv screens on each advertising products.

Too bad they are harder to read with the tiny print, dull background colours and the screen reflections.

A few of the Woolworths stores near me have the electronic TV screens. I don’t mind them. At least they don’t have audio if I remember correctly. I remember years ago Woolworths had similar TV’s but customers figured out that the power cables could be pulled out. They tried securing the power cables better so they could not be taken out as easily but eventually they just disappeared thankfully. They were quite annoying.

There is a cost to rebrand the shops in the network. If it’s costing you nothing to maintain the shops then do nothing.

Plus there would be a thought somewhere within the company to keep the Target brand alive to prevent Target Corporation from being able to ship and do business here.

I doubt it. Target in the US have tried and failed overseas. I don’t think they’d want to take on a sinking ship.

The US Target would still claim the Target name in Australia and sit on it like they do in other countries.

The US Target is different to here, they operate a dual Supermarket alongside the General Merchandise setup all in one. I don’t believe that model has been tested here before.

Target in the US is quite good. Our Target here is just trash in comparison, you will see many social videos with US Visitors here walking into our Target and saying What the heck. Population centres over there are much higher so they can

I call ours “upmarket Kmart”

They are called hypermarkets and K Mart and Big W had tried them in the past.

In Sydney, Marrickville Metro had a Super K Mart when that shopping centre first opened. It didn’t work. They split it into a K Mart and then gave up half the floor space. I don’t remember if they tried a separate Coles there but the suburb already had a Coles so maybe they thought it was too much. Woolworths later opened in that space and it boomed. The other Coles was small and it later became a Bi-Lo but then disappeared completely. Ironic that when that Marrickville Metro expanded a few years back, they opened a huge Coles there alongside Woolies, Aldi and Kmart.

In Chullora, Big W and Woolworths were together. They then built a divider and split them. Wikipedia says these stores were called Woolworths Family Centres. Later, the site was completely redeveloped into a Marketplace shopping centre with a number of specialty stores alongside Big W and Woolies.

Target was a premium discount department store in Australia. In the early days, they competed with Myer and David Jones with some known brands as well as their home brands. I think their owners ran it into the ground because they wanted K Mart to succeed over all other brands.

Speaking of Highpoint I see theres an article about the centre planning to rival Chadstone in the coming years in the Herald Sun today.

Anyone able to sunmarise the details?

Here are the main points of the Herald Sun article about Highpoint’s expansion.

  • A massive 30-year plan is currently underway, with Highpoint to be transformed into a mixed‑use “urban village” with retail, office, community spaces, open green areas and housing.
  • The proposal will include about 2956 new dwellings — estimated to house around 6504 residents — with a variety of residential typologies, such as build-to-rent, residential hotels, student accommodation, and serviced apartments.
  • Planning approvals have been granted for some mid-rise developments outside the shopping centre core.
  • The next stages of the Urban Village project are in planning, with construction expected to commence in 2027/28.

Ah thank you. So more focussed on the residential aspect.

Target in the US is awesome. It’s got huge brand love like kmart and bunnings in Australia, and the groceries are pretty cheap

Considering the supermarket duopoly in Australia and that Westfarmers is not in the grocery business at all, why they don’t evolve target into the US model and incorporate grocery items and just copy the US model is beyond me

The store design is just streets ahead of ours

That’s been in the pipeline for years.

There is a plan to eventually to expand the shopping complex further on the east side where Woolworths is located and behind Big W.

Target is more a destination shopping store in the US. Target here is just a place you walk past and walk in and out because it just happens to be there. Probably one of the more irreverent retailers we have here these days.

I walk around Walmart, Target US, Macy’s, Nordstrom etc, really do see how these players do retail well as in being a destination, and how some operators here do a shit job, like Myer and Target.

Target Australia was good in the 1990s and early 00s. All fell apart after that.

I agree with you about that, but the store design of target US looks way more modern than Kmart, BigW, or Target AU. I’m sure a downsized version of this (with just the department store bit of design) would still look better than what we have now.
