Huge win for Nine, with its best network share since the Australian Open. Highest multichannel result of the year for 9Gem with the ICC T20 final ranking 6th overall beating Seven and 10’s reality shows. The cricket dragged down the results of everything else for the night with Married AFS and MKR posting season lows but I don’t think Nine will mind. 10 has finally dispensed with the “elimination” coding for Dancing WTS that was returning results that were little different to the result of the show’s rating.

Cricket also did well on Foxtel.

Huge share for 9Gem and Nine overall thanks to the cricket.
There will be two ICC tournaments next year: the 50-over Women’s Cricket World Cup in New Zealand and men’s T20 World Cup in India. I hope Nine (or whichever FTA network has the rights to) will consider showing the final of both tournaments on the main channel.

Probably a stupid question but I don’t understand why cricket rate better for Nine than Seven. Maybe Seven has invested in the wrong kind of cricket rights.

MAFS dipped to under 1 million as many people have decided to watch the cricket final between Australia and India on 9GEM, pulling mammoth figures. It outdated DWTS and MKR.

The crowd at the MCG was excellent—86174 people turned out to watch these two sides play.

It was a World Cup final, rather than just a match as part of the series so a certain gravitas attached.

Nine still has rights to World Cup events.

Three things:

  1. They don’t have the cricket that really draws in the crowds in the most important time (Ashes, ODIs, T20, World Cup)

  2. Simulcast.

  3. More often than not the Aussies seem to play really well on the cricket matches that Nine have. Maybe it’s a bit of a luck thing but still…

Sums up the mess Seven is in that they lose the tennis to get the cricket, but they buy the wrong cricket! Big bash hype collapsing doesn’t help either. Well done to Nine getting the Ashes in England and this.

You’re forgetting that Nine secured their ICC rights package well before a) They thought about switching from cricket to tennis during Sumer and b) Seven even imagined acquiring home cricket rights

Yesterday’s Women’s T20 World Cup was also broadcast on Foxtel and attracted massive ratings of its own (see numbers above).
Nine says last night’s cricket is the highest rating program on a multi channel so far this year.

Great numbers for Nine . The Cricket’s numbers impressed me.

Thus, Seven and Ten down, for obvious reasons.

Ten decided not to split DWTS numbers into 2 like usual? Ie - the elimination segment usually makes the top 20.

I do not see DWTS returning next year. It is too expensive for the return in viewers. Ten stink on Sunday nights and they need to do something new. I would start by moving the Project to 6pm and start prime time line up at 7pm.

I reckon the World Cup would have rated 1m if it was on the main channel. Foxtel got 315k for it so to only rate 531k on FTA is poor imo

@Sifon brilliant logic

It was up against the #1 show on TV

Ratings notably down in Melbourne last night, Labour Day public holiday today. That just added to the declines across the board at the hands of the cricket.

That is pretty harsh.

Check the ratings for all the previous women’s cricket games (low, niche, it’s continually building and Australia rooted for last night and it worked).

How many other multi-channel programs have rated 500k or more in their history? Less than 20 hazard a guess!

I reckon give DWTS one last Crack H2 of the year and 7pm. Finished by 830.

Otherwise why bother. Horrendously costly production.

But still, 9Gem is number 1 multichannel last night

Exactly.

OK so the ratings of Married At First Sight were down, although I’m pretty sure Nine are quite happy they got over 1.5 million viewers across their main channel and 9Gem! Would the network have received those figures if the Women’s T20 World Cup Final aired on the main channel with MAFS taking a break? I highly doubt it.

I agree and said myself that Nine would be happy but the combined audience isn’t a true picture of primetime because of time differences. The game was largely over in Perth before primetime began with 9Gem ranking 4th in multichannels out west. In Brisbane, the match finished before MAFS.

Stateless lost over a third of its viewers from week one.
Australian drama’s need to make episode one of any new series more of a “gotcha” rather than a slow burn, expecting viewers to stick with it because “it gets better as it goes along”.
I was one of those who didn’t tune back in for episode 2.
