Sunday 7 November 2021

As I’ve said in the past, Nine would be stupid not to make her Hitch’s successor.

Surely Tony Jones would be first in line? Sunday news always rates high, not sure the choice of host has a huge impact there.

Surely a big factor in the Melbourne audience for Nine News is the fantastic lead in. Nine already had 100,000 more people watching the lead in.

No reason why 7 couldn’t launch its own travel program at 530pm in Melbourne. They are largely backed by sponsors anyway they don’t cost a bomb to make.

I guess the issue is that Postcards is broadcast for almost the entire year (except for the middle Sunday of Australian Open tennis) while Seven’s Melbourne-based travel show can only air during the AFL off-season.

The return of Melbourne Weekender would help a bit. The series seems to do better for Seven in Sydney and Brisbane:

I’ve also mentioned months ago that having Mike Amor on a Sunday instead of Peter Mitchell doesn’t help. Peter still seems to attract more of the audience, if I’m not mistaken.

Two reasons Nine News Melbourne smashed Seven News Melbourne last night.

  1. Postcards lead-in
  2. The Block lead-out

Sorry but absolutely nothing to do with Alicia. Could’ve been Dougal Beaty presenting and they would’ve got the same numbers.

IMO, Tony Jones is the natural successor to Hitch. He’s a good anchor and is importantly familiar to the audience. Would many of the audience who ONLY watch 6pm news from Monday to Friday actually know who Alicia is?

If recent Summer ratings are anything to go by, yes.

For another thread however horrendous on ‘news’.

Woeful and arrogant. Thin skinned egotist.

Alicia’s ratings are top notch and sundays is usually the most watched night of tv each week.

7 really stuffed up this year by allowing The Block an almost free run at the end, by having nothing left to put against the last part of the series.
Where it was looking a bit shaky early on, it has recovered well and blitzed the (poor) competition at the end of the series.

To be fair Australia’s Got Talent was meant to be on. They even had Neil and Alicia here ready to film then the lockdown happened.

The Block Auction is compelling, superbly produced event television that always rates well and deservedly so. It reminds of major sporting events like SOO or an AFL/NRL Final more so than a typical final episode to a reality show.

You have to go back quite a number of years to see a reality show getting such a large boost in its audience for its finale.

Doubt one night per week of AGT would’ve counteracted The Block though.

I would’ve thought AGT would’ve been stripped to three nights a week following the trend of all other Seven shows.

If AGT was on air instead of the tripe that is Big Brother VIP then Seven would undoubtedly be more competitive. It’s such a better show compared to what we’re subjected to right now.

I really don’t think AGT would have rated much above 450-500k.

Though it would still be better than how Big Brother VIP is currently doing. I’d probably even say that the demos rating would be on par if not better than Big Brother VIP, which would still be more appealing.

Not to mention if they had Neil Patrick Harris onboard it would be a pretty big drawcard. Maybe for next year Seven should try and entice another big name to judge the show.

I generally find that AGT tends to skew old, it would struggle to do better than Big Brother VIP in the demos.
