A very complex night to unpack with the Commonwealth Games coming to and end and four season premieres.

Seven came out on top with another +30 network share with the Night session on Seven and 7Mate contributing the most.

Seven chose to move their winning Commonwealth Games off the main channel for the new season of My Kitchen Rules that got off to a modest start coming third out of the three reality shows with an audience of just 503,000. That compares to the 2020 season that saw the show shelved after debuting with 498,000. Seems like it would have been better to wait until Monday for clearer air on Monday avoiding the Games.

Meanwhile for Nine, it was a big win with The Block way ahead of the competition on 867,00. That was up on the previous season the debuted to 747,000 a rare achievement in the 2022 TV landscape.

Over on 10, The Masked Singer did well to draw almost 600k for the reveal and 522,000 for the rest of the show. That compares to 660,000 and 642,000 for last season but was up on Hunted in the same timeslot the previous week that had 492,000.

ABC’s lineup also saw the season premiere of Spicks and Speck with 449,000. That compares to 665,000 for the 2021 season opener.

Interesting for Monday with the Games coverage over to see how many of Seven’s viewers switch to MKR, or perhaps go back to streaming.

MKR could go in any direction from here probably too early to say, seems unlikely it will trend a whole heap higher however. I still get the feeling that the damage to the brand has been done and the ship has sailed.

It it trends higher over the coming weeks then I would take that as a win. Any sinking into the 400s then it’s done.

How many weeks does MKR run? Isn’t Masked Singer only a few weeks? Wonder what Ten has after that? May be less competition then
who knows

Didn’t expect The Block to have such a good start. Maybe a change of location (Gisborne South, north west of Melbourne) and the much publicised walkout of Joel and Elle?

This season of MKR has 16 episodes. Seven will show four episodes this week and three episodes per week after that, so it is expected to run for five weeks.

Guess the only thing that is slightly promising for Seven is that it (barely) rated higher than the lackluatre 2020 premiere. In today’s landscape that’s probably somewhat acceptable. Having said that perhaps Seven should’ve launched Farmer Wants a Wife or AGT off the Commonwealth Games considering those two are considerably more reliable as performers, and save MKR for after The Block finishes.

The Block is starting off surprisingly well. Maybe the publicity of this week’s ‘walk out’ has sucked in a number of people.

Masked Singer down as expected but still very competitive which 10 should be happy with.

If the point of paying for the Commonwealth Games is to get eyeballs watching your promos, then it looks like a fail with MRK third in total people and more importantly all key demos. I suspect it will pick up tonight but so might the competition. Later, when viewers who tuned in for Nigella find she is no longer on the show, will they leave as well? Perhaps the show needs a little scandal!

My thoughts exactly. It would’ve got a boost thanks to the Commonwealth Games (likely some viewers switching on not expecting a cooking show) so in that sense 500k is pretty weak. How many stay on from here will be the true test.

Ten were realistically probably hoping around 600k for the Masked Singer would be a good result, so it didn’t do to far from that and did well in demos. The audience grew in the later part, maybe some viewers flocked over from MKR/expecting comm games.

I’m still gobsmacked how much pull the Block has after all of these years but it’s one of those formats that has a solid fanbase.

From Nine:

  • The Block Launch completely dominated its timeslot across the 5 City Metro, in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth with all key demos and Total People.
  • The Block Launch grew strongly year on year across both Metro (+16%) and Regional (+27%)
  • The Block Launch was the No.1 program of the night overall across the 5 City Metro with People 25-54 and People 16-39.

Thank goodness for The Comm Ganes, otherwise Seven’s shares wouldnt look good. MKR could have done better. But at least it’s a short run series.

The Masked Singer did well for 10. Everything before and after it did average.

Nine did very well for The Block. For a reality show thats lasted this long, well.done.

I don’t watch The Block (flicked between MKR and Masked Singer) but a family member messaged in the first half hour and said, “I can’t stand all the drama on The Block”. Seems drama and scandal do rate. They said they intend to just watch the reveal episodes.

Seven won all markets doing best in Adelaide and Perth. Nine did best in Sydney, less than 1 point behind Seven. The three east coast markets were 10’s best.

Outside the top 20 included.

Any reason why WT is tanking? (I don’t watch these shows but would be interested to hear why)

The coding on the weekend is different to during the week; 7am-8am is “Early” with the main coding for 8am-10am. Yesterday W Sunrise 7am-8am had a huge audience probably associated with the Comm Games - it was higher than the 8-10 portion of Today. And they kept watching Sunrise across the morning. Otherwise W Today often rates poorly especially on Saturdays. The Weekend Sunrise team is much preferred over the W Today team.

It’s a shorter than usual season for MKR. A normal MKR runs for 6 weeks during its first incarnation

The Amazing Race coming soon.

Presuming 7 will have Farmer/AGT when MKR finishes.

Do you think The Block will go down as the biggest reality show in Australian television? It is staggering how well its done after 18 seasons and 20 years.

Weekend Sunrise and Today have a late portion (9-10am) on Saturdays in the ratings. Do they have the same on Sundays, or is the main part 8-10am as mentioned?

Not on Sundays. Though News Breakfast has a 10-11am segment.
