10 and ABC posted small gains compared to the previous Sunday while Sven and Nine were down slightly. 10’s share was its best Sunday in 9 weeks.

There was not a big change in the reality program results. MasterChef posted a small increase while Big Brother was steady. The Voice slipped about 50k to its lowest Sunday of the survey. However, Nine’s line-up was bolstered by another good result from 60 Minutes recording almost 700k in preliminary numbers - up +60k week-on-week. Nine Late News that followed out-rated the post reality show offerings on Seven and 10.

Very close between Seven News and Nine News in Melbourne, in the 400,000 range.
I wonder if there was an audience drop during Big Brother last night? I watched the first half hour wanting to know what happened during the temporary shutdown due to COVID-19, but once the competition returned to normal I switched to MasterChef.

The overly dramatic BB promos had no affect on the ratings…

Massive share for Channel 10 on a Sunday, almost beat Channel 7!

Big numbers for The Voice but way behind the other reality shows in the demos. No wonder artists from the show have such limited success, the younger demographics that are listening to music more are not watching it in huge numbers.

The promo’s were super dramatic and I think in fact it could have hurt it. People hear enough about COVID-19 every day let alone needing it thrown in their faces on a show like this. Everyone has been impacted by it and I thought the way that Seven were milking the house going into “lockdown” a little insensitive given there are 300,000 people in Victoria actually in lockdown.

Notice the point of difference with MasterChef. It didn’t milk the COVID-19 situation once in it’s promos. It has openly been discussed on the show but only where necessary, rather than try to lure viewers because of it. These shows are an escape and slightly touching on the topic does make it relatable for what we are going through but we are not watching reality shows to make a big deal about it unnecessarily either. Nothing that happened on Big Brother really affected the game at all.

This Sunday was one of the closest as far as key demographic results go. In 25-54 the difference between 1st (Nine) and 3rd (10) was less than one percent for the network shares. In main channel share, similarly the difference between first (10) and third (Seven) was less than 2 percent.

Nine won all markets except Perth. In three markets the race between second and third was very close with Seven just ahead of 10. In Sydney the margin was 0.2%, Melbourne 0.6% and in Brisbane it was a tie.

From Nine:

NINE NETWORK WINS SUNDAY

The Nine Network was the winning network on Sunday night across the 5 City with People 25-54 and Total People (30.2%) .

You’re absolutely right - they might buy a song or two that’s sung on the show but having such an older-skewing audience means they aren’t as invested in buying/ streaming singles, going to concerts, etc.
Not to mention a 1.5 hr episode literally consists of 15-20 mins singing.

Interesting that Nine doesn’t state anything about The Voice in their media release - it’s not topping demos and hasn’t been the #1 most-watched entertainment show in a couple weeks since Masterchef overtook them.

the footy is narrowly allowing Seven to win.

Speaking of that - this seems to be the third day of the winning streak for Seven News Melbourne.

I have been thinking about why the artists from The Voice have limited success and I don’t think its due to the lack of demographic interest. There was a point when the show absolutely dominated the demographics. I think its because we don’t get to know the contestants. They sing about 6 times throughout the show and that is about it. The show is clearly about the judges and gimmicks and isn’t about creating the next Australian star.

Masterchef keeps dominating. It hasn’t really lost any ground this year and continues to be very consistent. I really thought Big Brother would do a lot better last night with the shutdown promotion it was given. There should have been a lot more interest in it last night.

I have also been thinking both nine and seven are only seeing the impacts of social distancing on their reality shows now. 3 months after the pandemic really hit Australia. 10 saw the impacts a lot quicker. I really think 10 needs to consider filming their shows more in advance rather than a few months before they go to air. I am assuming now Junior Masterchef is on shaky ground to get underway and The Amazing Race surely won’t start production for a few months now.

I’m so glad to see Big Brother sliding down the ratings ladder. It’s absolutely awful this season, the writers haven’t tried at all, the editors have failed to introduce every housemate properly and 90% of the cast have zero personality.
I hope it goes back to Channel 10 and we can have the return of LIVE Big Brother before TV’s eventual heat death.

Spot on - I would say there’s 2 main problems: the format of the show and exhaustion of the ‘singing reality show’.

Firstly, the TV singing comp is a tired concept - when Idol first premiered on TV, we had the success stories of Kelly Clarkson/Carrie Underwood’s of American Idol and Guy Sebastian on Australian Idol. The concept of a singing show on TV was new and exciting - by the time The Voice began we had already seen Idol, Got Talent, X Factor, etc. the shine of singing shows had worn off.

There’s a reason why The Voice hasn’t produced a success story internationally (it’s not just Aus which hasn’t produced a star, I can’t name a single UK/US Voice winner). The format puts the focus on coaches by making them pitch to the contestants and argue why they are the best coach to mentor them. They focus on ‘Team Kelly’ or ‘Team Guy’ whereas Idol had judges purely there to critique, not to rival each other.

With Insiders and Landline usually cracking the top 20 for a Sunday (and sometimes Sunrise like this Sunday) , ive always wonders what the other Sunday DAY shows rate? Like Offsiders, ABC News at 12, Sports Sunday and The Sunday Footy show (assuming that Nine combines the AFL and NRL versions togethor), plus the morning Show and studio 10 Highlights Shows etc.
