State of Origin saw Nine record just over 40%. The best results came in Sydney and Brisbane. Nine also won Adelaide while Melbourne and Perth were won by Seven.
The 1.86 million result for Origin 2 compared to 1.654 m in 2020 but otherwise was lower than previous years.
MasterChef stayed competitive for 10 with over 600,000 ahead of 7News Spotlight.
It was another day of big news numbers especially in Sydney while Sunrise was again over 100k in Sydney. Multiple entries for ABC News reflected afternoon news coverage.
Nine won strongly thanks to the state of origin. Last night was a lopsided match where QLD failed to score during the whole match. Has QLD been competitive then the ratings would have gone up. State of origin rated so weak in Melbourne, beaten by Murder she wrote 7 news spotlight, masterchef, Sunday project. This was the last Sunday origin match. From next year, it will be returning to Wednesday’s.
Nine News was tied with seven News in addeliade.
This is the downside of scheduling State of Origin on a Sunday night. Casual viewers who have already watched an AFL game or two are less likely to want to tune in for more sport in the evening.

The Sunday Project full hour : Biggest audience since 19 July 2020.
Whopping shares for Nine and sets up another large run chase so to speak for Seven (it could go down the wire again).
Although I’d say Seven, 10 and ABC would be a little pleasantly surprised with a few of their results last night. Maybe goes to show there really is lots on offer on Sundays and if it’s one-sided, viewers especially casuals, has easy finds for alternatives. In that regard, probably a wise decision reverting to the normal timeslot I guess.

Well, didn’t quite get this one, but did tip the Sydney result correctly
I’d also suggest the one-sided game being over at 3 qtr time (even though a local team was winning it’s not a big club) and was finished by 10min to, meaning viewers had plenty of time to switch to Nine News if they wanted.

24 WEEKEND TODAY - SUNDAY
25 FORREST GUMP
30 NINE NEWS: LATE EDITION -SUN (4 markets)
Weekend Sunrise recorded the 4th highest rating for Sunrise or Weekend Sunrise of the year.
Weekend Today recorded the second highest audience for Today or Weekend Today of the year.
Sunrise won all markets except Brisbane that was won by Today. Sunrise was approx 50k ahead of Today as Today posted a 6 figure rating in Sydney. Today was 50k ahead of News B.
With the news ratings. Seven Sydney recorded its highest Sunday audience since the Commonwealth Games in 2016. For Nine it was the highest Sunday audience since March 2020.
The A-League grand final did well on Foxtel (compared with last year’s 84,000) but the same can’t be said for the replay on ABC ME.
Massive live VPM ratings for SOO game 2 despite the lopsided result. It’s hard to see any other program (including Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony and AFL Grand Final) topping that.
Numbers were so high for 7News Perth due to the WA Premier announcing restrictions coming into play, earlier in the day, due to a positive COVID case. Even Ten News First Perth was high for a Sunday with 65,000 - more than Nine News Perth.
I could see a ‘big’ daytime Olympics event coming close to it and perhaps even beating it.
For example, a potential/likely showdown between Ariarne Titmus v Katie Ledecky in both the 200 & 400 metre freestyle would two of the blockbuster events at these Olympics and would receive a lot of hype and build-up. Considering swimming finals will be held in the morning (to suit NBC), I can see people making sure they’ll be able to stream those events at work, if they’re out and about, etc.
I’ll be having a dedicated computer in my office streaming the coverage during work hours. So it can be in constantly so I don’t miss any big medal events.
