#2

Preliminary AO numbers are down on recent years, though there has usually been quite an adjustment for final numbers.

Here are recent final numbers

2018 1,730,000
2017 2,668,000
2016 1,631,000
2015 1,880,000
2014 1,683,000
2013 2,120,000

#3

It was a boring final. I flicked over to 10 for half of it.

Nine News Melb 200k down on LY not sure what went wrong there.

#4

Still, a magnificent share for Nine. MAFS will have plenty of momentum tonight, if it doesn’t work then Nine will have some explaining to do.

I’m a Celeb has outdone itself as a Live Sports Fighter, the real test will be against thr debut of MAFS and MKR tonight.

Lol at Seven.

#5

2nd lowest rating Aus Open Final ever, I believe.

#6

Nine and Tennis Australia will be disappointed with last night’s numbers as it was a one-sided final.
I’m a Celebrity held up against the tennis yet again but BBL’s ratings continued to drop (apart from the spike in the last five overs of the Heat’s run chase, it occurred after Djokovic beat Nadal in the tennis).
Audience shares for the same night last year (network shares in brackets)
Seven 36.7% (42.8%)
Nine 19.1% (23.4%)
Ten 16.8% (19.4%) <- I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here premiered on this night
ABC 6.4% (9.5%)
SBS 3.7% (4.8%)

#7

They got a 35% network share. Not disappointing. The total viewership may have been underwhelming but still

#8

Despite the tennis, Ten increased its share by 1 percentage point from the previous Sunday. Seven however, ranked third in main channel shares and recorded its lowest network share since 2017 State of Origin. Seven did win Perth though where Nine’s main channel ranked 3rd.

#9

No huge surprise that the tennis final was low - the result never looked in question from when Rafa lost his very first service game in the first set.

It’s still done it’s job in giving MAFS momentum going into tonight though

#10

I still think not having Test cricket helped Nine last night, as proved by the BBL numbers not doing much at all, Ch 7 beaten by Ch 10!

Also, last night was around 100k or so off last years 5 set Federer vs. Cilic final (remember how surprised everyone was that depsite a great match, having Federer in it and 5 sets - it still lost 1m from the year prior!)

So I think that says A) there was never going to be a record audience in the beginning and B) Australia loves Nadal and stuck by him for a lot last night, hoping he could do a fighting comeback.

No?

#11

Agree. Although viewership is down, at the end of the day, Nine has won by a big margin. But it is another story whether the amount of money they had paid for is worth it or not. The same goes to Seven whether it’s worth losing tennis and securing cricket.

#12

Although the total numbers were down on last year, I still think Nine will be reasonably happy with last night’s ratings for the Australian Open Mens Final. Getting over 1.5 million metro viewers and a 35% main channel share in the current TV landscape isn’t anything to be sneezed at!

What should Nine be disappointed about? Tonight’s ratings of Married At First Sight if they don’t beat MKR and in the process, get at least 1.2 million in the metro markets.

#13

The Mens Final between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal was a lopsided match. It was well down on last year’s men’s final (Federer vs Cilic). AFter having dinner, I continued watching the Match and noticed that the game was all but over for the tournament.
And why did Nine News Perth didn’t have any figures?

#14

I think it might go higher and I’d expect a similar trend from LY in that MKR continues to decline whilst Married soars.

#15

9 should be happy with last nights figures and the AO generally. They’ve done well.
7s numbers would’ve been different last night if the cricket test was still going.
Cricket, in many ways, has not worked well so far for them. But there’s still a way to go and it will be interesting to see what happens now the tennis is over and if it picks up to give them any momentum leading in to the official ratings.
I’ll be interested to see how 7 promote and manage the cricket in the 19/20 season. They really need to make their coverage of the BBL more fun, so that even if the game is not so great, it’s entertaining to watch.

#16

The question is …Did Ten dodge a bullet in not paying so much money for cricket ratings? They are getting respectable figures with Celebrity. Can they increase on momentum rolling into proper ratings season?

The value would’ve only existed in an exclusive deal with streaming. Having Fox and Seven has done CA no favours.

#17

I’d says so considering Nine are saying they will lose $10m in covering the tennis and who knows how much Seven will lose.

Will it pay off with a boost to post-tennis programs. I don’t know but I think this is unsustainable long term.

#18

If Married goes big tonight (and this week), Nine can give another tick to having the Aus Open.

If it doesn’t and also doesn’t grow, which would be a big surprise if this happens, then maybe the AO wasn’t all they’d hoped it’d be.

I’m extremely hypothesising here

#19

If high rating show continues to rate highly, multi-million dollar sports rights acquisition worth it.

#commentary

#20

But only if they make up the $10m shortfall plus more?
