Seven easily won a low rating Sunday, part of the ANZAC Day long weekend. It was the first Sunday after the Easter ratings pause with Seven scoring its highest Sunday share of the survey. That was due to a spit schedule with AFL and Hey Hey. The combined rating for Hey Hey We’re 100 was 679,000. That compares to the Hey Hey We’re 50 that had 1,224,000 in October last year.

For second-placed Nine it was the network’s lowest Sunday share of the survey with Lego Masters posting its lowest audience ever while 60 Minutes that followed hit a 2022 low.

Third-placed 10 had its second best Sunday share though numbers were down on usual with MasterChef’s first elimination of the season the best for the network.

Meanwhile the premiere of the new Australian drama Barons disappointed for ABC, rating lower than anything in the timeslot this year and compared to 356,000 for the premiere of Troppo in February.

SBS’s line up missed the top 20 unlike the previous week when it managed two entries.

Just horrendous ratings all-round.

Interesting. I’d say the split schedule worked. Hey Hey won and beat Lego and MasterChef in all markets it aired. No filler programming would have done that I think.

The combination of school holiday and Anzac Day long weekend means the ratings were much lower than usual. Good results for Hey Hey It’s 100 Years though.

A return to “Official Ratings” after the two-week break for Easter, to return to a low rating night on another Long Weekend.

Seven’s split schedule worked out afterall.

ABC’s Barons didn’t get off to a good start. ABC probably should have held off on it until next weekend when there’s no public holiday.

Does anyone know how a tied ratings situation like this is resolved? Is it simply the case that the program (or in this case, match) which airs first gets listed first or does OzTam have another metric/figure they look at in order to break it?

The posted ratings are rounded. The actual numbers are to several decimal places (or parts of a viewer).

I actually enjoyed this second special. Found myself chuckling out loud quite a few times.

That’s a shocker and really disappointing. Did they not promote this well? Was the title of the show confusing in regards to what the cintent was actually about?

it seemed to be promoted quite well. I don’t know if it is to do with the ABC’s bewildering decision to drop the whole season on iview in one go or the fact that it is a long weekend…

It was well promoted from what i saw over on the ABC. They do like to add shows on iview before airdate which doesn’t help.

It’s good that the ABC is having Aussie Drama across the year on a Sunday 8.30-ish slot for pretty much the whole year (in 2021 and 2022). Some were successful, like The Newsreader, and some flopped, like The Barons by the looks of it.

Whether or nor subsequent episodes are on iViews shouldn’t have a big impact on the premiere episode’s ratings. Plus none of the episodes are in the top 10 VPM programs over the last 24 hours.

Newsreader also benefitted from some decent catchup numbers - will be interesting to see what happens with Barons once catch-up is factored in

Just wondering if ABC is commissioning the best shows here or giving them the best titles to sell them to viewers. To me, the titles Barons and Troppo tell me very little and seem to be a bit too niche to attract a significant audience IMO. Compared to The Newsreader that had a lot of buzz about it, had fairly broad appeal and a title that makes it pretty clear what it’s about.

I have the same feeling about the titles of a lot of these shows.

Maybe sonething life Beach Barons or Surf Barons might have explained more to viewers about the series.

With Troppo, I’m not sure. Maybe Gone Troppo? Or maybe they should have stuck to Crimson Lake which was the title of the book that the series is based on.

The trailer made me not want to tune in, i don’t think it resonates enough to be a ratings winner.

I worked in NBC marketing (promos) for quite a while a few years ago

You’re both right. Show naming is a critical element. The wrong show name can translate to Low awareness and ratings

Generic one word title names always fare badly.

More detail and more words is better
