Nine won Sunday for the fourth consecutive week as the new season of Celebrity Apprentice launched. Nine slipped from recent weeks while Seven’s spotlight special saw the network share match the previous week. 10 was down slightly while ABC gained some viewers. Eurovision on SBS boosted the network to its best Sunday result of this survey.

Nine won Sydney and Brisbane while Seven won Melbourne and Perth with Adelaide a tie. Nine had a narrow win in the key demographics.

Nine strategically coded Celebrity Apprentice into two segment with the main program averaging 682,000 lifting to 812,000 for the Boardroom segment. The last season of the show debuted to 569,000 in 2015.

Sevens Spotlight special ranked between the two segments in preliminary numbers down slightly on last week’s special and ranked 7th in 25-54. Meanwhile MasterChef was also down slightly ranking eighth in total people but still a top five demo contender.

Later 60 Minutes had its best result in five weeks while Seven’s movie gave the network some better late night shares.

Eurovision was split coded into the final and winners’ announcement, both missing the top 20. The best number came from the morning’s winner’s announcement that ranked 29th. The bulk of the evening program ranked 30th but was well down on the 2019 show, drawing 2/3 of that audience despite stating at 7:30pm this year. The combined morning + evening ratings was the event’s lowest ever.

I reckon Nine would’ve wanted Celebrity Apprentice to do better. It’s not a bad show but it’s never undergone the ‘stripped’ strategy so would be interesting to see how the show rates throughout the season.

If Seven has something that is worthwhile to investigate instead of Martin Bryant then the special would’ve rated much higher. No one wants to hear about that wretched criminal anymore.

Celebrity Apprentice off to a solid start after a six-year break. Tonight will be a big test when it is up against additional competition in Big Brother.

Seven News finishing eight minutes late didn’t help its figures whatsoever. In Adelaide it lost to Nine News even with the AFL lead-in.

Law & Order: Organized Crime missed the top 20 after moving to a new night and timeslot.

I think it’s due to the morning live broadcast and Australia missing the final.

gone are the days Eurovision used to single-handedly bump SBS’ prime time share into double figures. So many changes to the landscape now with viewing the event now available live in the morning plus being on-demand.

Good start to Celebrity apprentice Australia and this helped nine win the night.

48 2021 EUROVISION SONG CONTEST - FINAL RPT: WINNER ANNOUNCED
56 2021 EUROVISION SONG CONTEST - FINAL (MORNING) LIVE

In 2019 the combined morning and evening Eurovision rating was over 410,000. The evening numbers suffered due to an 8:30pm start.

This year the the combined audience was less than 300k and as in 2019 the winner’s announcement in the evening rated lower than the rest of the program.

Note that the ratings for the morning broadcast include anyone who watched a PVR recording of that during the day.

At breakfast Weekend Sunrise was +65k ahead of Weekend Today with News B another 30k lower. Sunrise won all markets except Brisbane where it ranked third.

It’s Eurovision and I think many of us traditionalists would prefer to see an overseas broadcast package than our our commentary team. Maybe the UK?

These Seven News specials are doing well in total viewers but not so much in the demos. Still it is keeping eyeballs on Seven after the news and if they have stories worth investigating they should look to these rather than the usual filler content that they pluck out.

Well that’s not completely a surprise with no Australian in the final this year - plus in recent years it becomes increasingly harder to avoid spoilers with social media so it’s always going to be a struggle. SBS need to go back to airing the semi-finals in primetime on the same day that they happened (i.e. Wed and Fri) instead of opting to air them delayed over the weekend which I think will affect viewership of the competition across the board. There’s not a lot of eyeballs on TV on Saturday nights so I don’t know why they persist on delaying performances to air then.

I don’t mind Myf and Joel but I would love it if we had an option to just mute the commentary and just watch the show. The role of commentators is largely irrelevant nowadays.

Good start for Celebrity Apprentice.

Wow, was thinking last night’s Martin Bryant interview would flop (not to mention the promos flogging more Craig McLachlan stuff which I thought might’ve alienated more viewers). 700k+ metro is a great number for anything outside news these days.

Apprentice did about what I expected at launch, but how will it go from now? I expected it to be the top show outside news last night, but as aforementioned didn’t realise Spotlight would do so well again.

I’m surprised by MasterChef and Spicks and Specks not really lifting, thought they’d get a lift last night, although numbers were actually on par all round except for Nine which was down on Lego’s semi 900k+.

Shock result at 6pm, with Seven News Melbourne losing with AFL lead-in for the first Sunday so far this year since AFL returned I believe.

AFL was also well down, not helped by the West Coast game being delayed by hours, no game in Brisbane and Collingwood being down the bottom of the ladder and the only Melbourne team in that game.

I don’t mind the commentary as most countries do it. The main problem for me with the prime time coverage is how it’s made so unnecessarily long with the constant studio filler (and has extra commercial breaks inserted in too). The show is long enough as it is and it just completely ruins the flow. The commentary in the live version from Myf and Joel is more than enough without needing everything else.

I reckon BB will sink into the high 400s or low 500s tonight.

Why?

I wonder how much the Nine Network (and Warner Bros. International Television Production Australia) paid Lord Sugar to host Celebrity Apprentice Australia?

$1 million?
$2 million?
$x million?
