The men’s final of the Australian Open delivered for Nine on Sunday with close to 36% network share. The biggest audience for Nine was in Melbourne with +40% of the audience, also winning in the Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide while Seven was an easy winner in Perth.

The audience for the final was 1.17 million with 357,000 watching the embarrassing presentation that followed.

The audience is one of the lowest recorded for an AO final and compares to 2020 when 1.524 million tuned in and Nine had a network share of 46%. 1.59 million watched in 2019 and in 2018 it was 1.73 million and in 2017 2.67 million.

Elsewhere, The Amazing Race topped the entertainment offerings with Holey Moley next best, both down slightly from the previous Sunday.

ABC’s line-up also took a hit with Harrow down 80,000. Later, Seven’s movie just made the top 20.

Nines shares hampered by a shorter match time also.

Big switch off for the presentation though.

The 2021 Australian Open Men’s singles final was down from 2020 (Novak Djokovic v Dominic Thiem), but Channel 9 still won the night. Nine won in all cities except Perth where it fell to Seven. The Novak Djokovic-Daniel Medvedev match was a lopsided match.
This year’s Australian open (14 days) was down from last year. However, this year’s AO was held during the official ratings period.
Nine News Was the number 1 program in Adelaide. Meanwhile, ABC news outrated the Australian Open in Perth market due to the time difference.
Seven News has wins in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth.

That’s a massive drop off from four years ago. Seven did the right thing to not bid a crazy amount of dollars to retain the rights, seeing that TV viewership has dropped like that.

Wow that is truly awful.

Although, I recall @OnAir or someone saying a similar comment when 10’s first Melbourne Cup pulled in a similar audience and then didn’t get any better the year after.

So I guess we all have to face reality that FTA TV isn’t getting any better and digital aside, these linear numbers are the new norm for some once top rating events.

Makes AFL GF’s 1m increase to 3m metro last year look insane.

For some reason I swear I saw an ad for it coming soon to Ch 10 ?

Yes Season 3 premieres on 10 this week. Nine is showing repeats - Season 1 was on Foxtel, season 2 on 10.

I think this Aussie Open is hard to judge - it’s fallen outside of its usual cycle and I wouldn’t underestimate that, people are back in their usual routines by now, whereas some might have started watching while on summer leave and that interest saw them follow the tournament to its conclusion. It has almost felt like an add-on to the summer of sport rather than being part of it.

There’s also the fact Djokovic is not as popular as a Nadal or Federer, while Medvedev is pretty low-profile too for someone in the world’s top 5.

Does the presentation actually fit the exact time it aired, or could it have been coded a bit later and is therefore really the coverage after the match (they eventually went to a repeat of the womens final). It was a short match so I’m thinking that could be the case. The women’s presentation didn’t get that dramatic a drop off.

I agree. There were a lot of factors at play this year from the pandemic that just went against it. Even before the tournament had started there was a fair bit of negative press (regarding players attitudes, quarantine, COVID positives etc). Then when the crowds were removed midway it really killed the vibe and momentum of the tournament a lot. It just never had a chance to be the big summer event that it usually is in Melbourne. Plus of course the time of the year definitely had an impact, then both of the finals were very one sided matches so didn’t peak like they would if they had been a bit longer.

I agree. Although given the ratings Nine have received over the past two weeks, you can be sure they’re hoping the Australian Open can be held at the usual time of year in 2022.

Nine showed the 2019 AO - it was meant to be Seven’s last one but they on-sold it to Nine so they wouldn’t had to juggle both cricket and tennis

Given Nines own press release doesn’t correct the numbers, I’d think it’s correct for the time it aired.

Sloppy management decision for 10 to be randomly returning the show this week after a few years, and to have allowed previous seasons to be picked up by 9 and for them to be airing around the same time.

Lower than expected for the Finals of the Australian Open, but understand why.

As for the “presentation” segment, i wonder if thats for the whole post match of 9.30 - 11.20pm, or was there another coded segment for the Tennis?
