Sunday 11 August 2019

I’ve also mentioned before its not a show you can watch the next day on “Encore” as they show ads for the next episode which ultimately tells you the outcome of the episode you are currently watching

The Ten promo’s are often spoilers even if you have seen the previous episode. Usually when they focus on certain contestants they are going, like Sarah last week got her own promo and then went home. Also if you watch the promo for tonight it is pretty obvious which tribe is going to Tribal Council, so might as well just tune in for the last 20 mins.

But yes the amount of advertising they are doing for Survivor (billboards, on ten etc) seems to be up on previous years. Whilst the audience is slightly better and hitting the demos, it’s still coming third in it’s timeslot and nowhere near big enough a hit to suffice two seasons a year. In all honesty it’s doing pretty similar numbers to Masterchef which people spun that as struggling this year, yet Survivor supposedly is a hit.

Sunday’s episode of Survivor rated significantly better than every Sunday episode of MasterChef. It was the highest rated Sunday episode of the show since the final week of 2016. Last week, every episode of Survivor made the top 10 in all three key demo groups. This season is clearly a rating success and the public seem to be loving the format - not withstanding episode lengths and promos.

I’m not comparing nights of the weeks but the peak audiences the shows were getting in general. There were Masterchef episodes most weeks that had 700-750k viewers (usually a Wednesday) which is more than Survivor has gotten any given night since the premiere. Obviously on a Sunday Survivor is doing a bit better but I’m just saying that Survivor is not a breakout hit and Masterchef isn’t a failure. There is not a big difference between the two in the total audiences that the shows could attract.

And doing very well in Melbourne, where it is consistently outperforming Seven’s shows in the timeslot and even very competitive with The Block. Didn’t Survivor make the top non-news program or even the outright top program in the city one night?

Didn’t survivor get around 950k on its Wednesday episode? Not sure Masterchef got figures like that on Wednesday’s…

But anyway you are right 2 seasons would be a bit much. I was more thinking of how successful it has been against the block this year and whether 10 should risk moving it.

Survivor’s launch episode was on a Wednesday. It got 800k and rated higher than all MasterChef episodes. It had 925k after 7-day catch up.

Never ever two seasons of anything in the one year please.

Given all these shows typically run for 3 months, and realistically they only program for 9 months of the year, 2 seasons would take up two thirds of the TV year.

Speaking of which, are Seven still doing the other MKR season this year? Not seen anything about it recently. That show already seems to take up half the year.

No.

Fair enough. I just noticed the amount when ff’wding through recordings. What shocked me was that no programme on any Ten channel was left unscathed. I also noticed that the promos for My Life Is Murder seem to have come at a cost to Survivor.

On the flip side you can alienate potential viewers by bombarding them, setting up for disappointment by hype and spoiling outcomes through their promos which has happened multiple times.
