The first day of the Easter “non-ratings” period saw Seven with a 1 point win over Nine.

The highest rated entertainment offering was Border Security on Seven with just under 500,000 viewers with ABC’s Grand Designs New Zealand next best with just on 400,000. Seven and Nine’s later offerings tied managing 310k for Janet Jackson and Code 1 Minute By Minute.

In the afternoon the first Australian Grand Prix for three years drew some viewers to 10 with the Race recording 534,000. That compares to 649,000 for the 2019 race. On Foxtel the race drew 281,000 compared to 290k in 2019.

Incredibly short sighted of 10 to not have any decent content (even a one off special or 2 parter for Sun-Mon) to run at 7:30 post the Melb Grand Prix, with Graham Norton not even in the top 20 last night.

With the Grand Prix finishing in the afternoon and leading into 5pm News then The Project - it wouldn’t have any flow on effect by 7.30pm.

10 and Foxtel will be happy with the ratings for the F1 race yesterday. The sellout crowds suggested that many fans preferred to watch the action live at Albert Park instead of in front of a telly.

Both NRLW grand final and AFL failed to make the top 20.

These major sports events can have a halo effect. For example, when the AFL Grand Final is played on a Saturday afternoon (i.e. every year pre-covid) many viewers stay tuned to Seven well into the evening. Whatever movie or show they air after the 6pm News usually wins the ratings by a large margin.

Obviously there isn’t as much interest in the F1, though Ten might have been expecting better than a 8.5% channel share for primetime…

Looks like the AFLW Grand Final outrated the NRLW Grand Final on FTA, though the NRLW had more viewers on STV.

It helps though when Seven News gets 1.1 million at 6pm as a lead in to a Saturday night. 10 News got a small bump from the previous week then The Project that followed was also up slightly, but not to any degree that would impact the rest of prime time. Any alternative programming last night would have to have stood on its own merits.

What was the AFLW’s STV numbers?

Flashpoint, I gather is doing less numbers at 10am

AFL only aired on the main channel live in Melbourne yesterday, with no game in Sydney or Perth, Brisbane on 7mate and Adelaide’s delayed by 3 hours (and Crows lost).

And a one sided game in Melbourne…

Did viewers switch off at 10am from Seven, Nine and the ABC when rolling coverage of nothing, i mean 80 minutes of waiting until the Federal Election Announcement was called at 11.20am. Since they didnt make the top 20…

Who, by the looks of it, would’ve been accounted for by the Australian Grand Prix anyway (which rated higher than what the highest rating Sunday AFL game would do all year).

It didn’t make Saturday’s Top 20 and I don’t think the figures have been posted anywhere. I’m only speculating based on Adelaide’s low Foxtel market penetration compared to the eastern states.

The stupidity of the programming department at Ten to have nothing better than Graham Norton to air on a Sunday night after having attracted a huge audience through the day with the Grand Prix. It really is beyond belief.

Memo to Ten: Norton is not prime time Sunday night viewing. Not even in Summer. You could’ve had a “best bits” special of HYBPA or The Cheap Seats to promote the imminent return of some of your best performing product but you choose an option that requires zero effort.

They wonder why ratings are in the toilet. Do better, Ten.

Would Working Dog have produced this for free though?

Why does it have to be done for free? The Graham Norton Show is not given to Ten for free.
