It was also announced they’ve signed deals with Lionsgate/Starz and MGM giving them access to lots of new content and a vast library of films.

Wow congrats to them. I was a sceptic at first because it is hard as a local start up to compete against the resources of a major international entertainment organisation like Netflix, but Stan has done really well to cement its place in the market.

Stan has commissioned two new locally-produced dramas, The Gloaming and Bloom.
8-part murder drama The Gloaming will be co-produced by ABC Studios International (Harrow) and Disney Media Distribution will handle the rights outside Australia. It is interesting that Disney and Nine will be working indirectly together through Nine’s half-ownership in Stan.
6-part mystery drama Bloom is co-produced by Playmaker Media and will be distributed outside Australia by Sony Pictures Television.
There will also be a spin-off from No Activity called No Activity: The Night Before Christmas.

This is good. We need some local drama because free to air is seriously letting us down at the moment.

So does that mean any future Lionsgate or MGM show made, will go to Stan (also Starz shows ) now home on Stan?

Stan has confirmed the new season of Will & Grace (10th season overall) will be streamed on Friday, October 5, same day as the US.

Screen creatives given opportunity of a lifetime to develop high-end series for Stan

In an Australian first, the Palaszczuk Government is working with Australian streaming company Stan to offer up the opportunity to develop four high-end drama series for Stan.

The partnership through Screen Queensland will be accessible to up-and-coming creative talent, as well as established players in the industry.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the new Premium Drama Development Fund on the eve of the 60th TV Week Logies Awards, to be held for the first time on the Gold Coast.

“This is an exciting opportunity to showcase our creative screen talent while the ‘who’s who’ of Australian television is right here on the Gold Coast,” the Premier said.

“Our matched investment will support both established practitioners and new voices to the industry in developing drama series suitable for Stan’s Subscription Video On Demand platform.

“These projects will focus on real Queensland stories, characters and locations with a global audience in mind.”

Screen Queensland CEO Tracey Vieira said the Premium Drama Development Fund aligned with Screen Queensland’s focus on delivering high-end content for innovative platforms.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Stan on this important development initiative as we continue to lead our industry onto other screen platforms,” said Ms Vieira.

“The fund further strengthens our creative and commercial partnership with Stan, which has already resulted in the Queensland-created feature film The Second, developed and produced through the Queensland Originals: Fully Funded Features program.”

The Second premiered at the Gold Coast Film Festival in April and hits cinemas on a limited release on Thursday before streaming on Stan on 20 July.

Stan CEO Mike Sneesby said the Queensland Government and Screen Queensland had achieved outstanding success in bringing high-end productions from local producers and Hollywood studios to Queensland’s world-class facilities and locations.

“As we prepare to release our critically-acclaimed Stan/Screen Queensland film The Second, we’re delighted to announce this exciting new initiative to support the development of local productions,” Mr Sneesby said.

“And as our slate of Stan Original productions has grown, so too have our ambitions for locally produced premium drama.

“Stan’s local production model creates world-class original programming for an Australian audience while bringing international investment into the local production industry through our global distribution partnerships.”

The Premium Drama Development Fund will be offered in two rounds based on experience level:

  1. RISING: round one is now open to Queensland-based individuals or creative teams without an established producer or production company and without experience in series drama. Applications close 5.00pm, Friday 17 August 2018.
  2. ESTABLISHED: round two is open to experienced Queensland talent and production companies with a track record in producing drama series. Applications open Monday 1 October 2018 and close 5.00pm, Friday 2 November 2018.

The successful projects will be presented to Stan for their commissioning consideration in June 2019.

UnReal is coming back July 17th Season 4. Apparently Season 4 was already filmed and all 8 eps will drop on that date.

Stan’s first original movie The Second has been given a scathing review by News Corp film critic Leigh Paatsch. He gave the movie one star out of five.

The Second is only screening at a small number of Palace Cinemas in eastern states and none in Adelaide or Perth.

How reliable is a NewsCorp review these days? Would he have given it five stars if it was on Foxtel instead of Stan?

This is massive that it is airing before the US.

There has been some talk of season 4 airing on Hulu instead of its original network. It is likely to be the final season unless ratings dramatically improve.

I would love to see some numbers on the impact that programs have on Stan, they have specifically promoted UnREAL, Drag Race & Will & Grace, I am assuming the results of this has seen an increase in subscribers.

Is it airing in Aus before the US ? I thought it was going to be on Hulu as well ?

Wikipedia says:

On May 22, 2018, it was announced that already-completed fourth season will run first on streaming service Hulu before airing on Lifetime. https://deadline.com/2018/05/unreal-hulu-first-run-lifetime-season-4-1202395777/

I don’t think Hulu have set a date as yet, I know they are debuting Season 3 for streaming soon.

Perhaps the new Sacha Baron Cohen series. Similar branding for HBO.

It has like a tribal grunt in it though, so I was thinking more of a Chris Lilley?
