Stadia

I can’t find any evidence of that. Currently there isn’t but I’d think that could be up to concert promoters. E.g. if Rodney Rude was performing at MSG at his peak, you wouldn’t have under 18s there, that’s for sure.

Maybe in the days of prohibition and general puritanical rule, probably, I’d believe that.

I think that’s just for the theatre, not the ICC itself. Remember it’s two separate buildings.

Another new naming rights deal signed off, one of the more unusual stadium names

“Ocean Protect Stadium” (Cronulla Sharks NRL home ground, formerly Sharks Stadium).

If only the announcement had been stadium improvements.

They’ve had a few!

When they first changed from Endeavour Field (original name) to Caltex Field (early 80s) I actually thought that was a new/different venue as ground naming rights were rare back then.

There is only thing that can improve that stadium, and that’s a wrecking ball.

Apparently stadiums will no longer be allowed to carry gambling companies as sponsors. So they’re getting in on it.

Yep, it’d still be PointsBet Stadium otherwise.

Story i have heard about MSG may only apply to Boxing and Wrestling. Apparently back in the day there was the odd riot there at some of those events

i’ve heard stories of old school (ie before everyone knew it was fake) bad guy wrestlers in both NYC and Philly being attacked with knifes during the show. apprently thats why Rowdy Roddy Piper wore a leather jacket to the ring all the time

Now that would make sense. Riots are something you don’t want kids near.

ABC News website has a feature article on some of the people supporting, opposing, or are neutral on the proposed Macquarie Point stadium.

There were less than 50 people who turned out to the anti protest in Devonport yesterday and I can’t make it to the one in Hobart today but I’m part of the Facebook group and there are so many posts of people travelling from all over the state to get down there and all generations. Many well advanced in their years who are saying this is the first political rally they’ve ever been to and many veterans who are going to wear their medals as an act to show their support against the RSL stance.
Today’s pro-stadium rally is shaping up to be a big one hopefully and they are hoping it to rival the Franklin Dam one. Chris Fagan will be speaking at the rally and many others and many of the hospitality venues are putting on a Happy Hour for supporters too.

What a turnout! The anti-stadium mob are claiming that there were just as many today as they had last week but the Police and the photos definitely tell a different story.

1500 people last week against the stadium while 15000 turned up in the pouring rain today in what many MP’s called the biggest protest on Parliament Lawns they’ve seen. This will definitely make the Legislative Council vote this week extra important. The people turned up and more importantly they filled the Salamanca eateries and hospitality venues to show what is possible with events in the CBD in the future. People of all generations were there and the Devils store in town was open with the CEO serving people and they probably sold out of all the gear from the pictures I saw of the queues waiting to get inside and get things. Hopefully we can now get rid of all the negativity of people trying to tell us we can’t achieve anything now.

Demolition of the grandstands and realignment of the racecourse have begun at Moonee Valley Racing Club as part of the precinct’s masterplan, which includes a new grandstand, updated racecourse, housing, and parkland. The redeveloped site will be opened to the community upon completion.

Racing is expected to return in 2027.

A big day coming up but that was huge news there.

I was a fairly lean No person but in recent times I’ve been swayed to be in the Yes camp, if only for Tasmania to be able to have some sort of investment towards a major project that represents the state on a national level, not to mention all the jobs as well as how much debt it would offset once it’s been built and put into use. If not now, it’ll be never and the NIMBYs will never get that. Do they prefer the state to look like an offcut of the country (as if they weren’t already) without a major icon like the major cities that can host big events, attract tourists and businesses and stimulate the economy?

For those who are crowing about the debt, it’s certainly ironic and rich of them to suggest that the stadium will worsen it when its benefits will offset the debt in the long term.

And it looks like the stadium will happen. Independent MLC Casey Hiscutt has just stated his support for the stadium, so that’s 8/15 in the Legislative Council voting yes (Liberal, 2 Labor as Labor has the president in the upper house who doesn’t vote, Rattray, Thomas, Hiscutt as yesses so far).

Can I just say how bad Cassy O’Connor is? I mean, oppose the stadium all you want (and at your own peril) but some of the language that she’s used in the debate is absolutely repulsive, like she treats parliament as if she’s the queen of Tasmania or something with language like ‘I condemn this order before the council’. Who the hell does she think she is? She and her partner and go and get…

According to ABC News live blog, the debate in Tasmania’s upper house has been going on all day.

UPDATE:

A final vote on the new stadium took place just after 11pm AEDT. The stadium order was passed with nine votes for, and five votes against.
