Wests Tigers have committed to playing home games at Leichhardt Oval and Campbelltown Sports Stadium for at least the next 15 years after securing $100 million in government funding.

How about some money for McDonald Jones Stadium?

Expand the car park, install public wifi, better public transport connectuons, maybe create a lower seating bowl, install higher capacity mobile phone towers, put more food and drink outlets in, more toilets, i could go on.

Leichhardt Oval has had its day. Its in a shit location, bugger all public transport, hill gets muddy after rail, one of the ā€œstandsā€.is a death trap. Demolish it and turn it into housing for essential workers.

Thoughts and prayers for Sydney Olympic Park next Sunday..

Oz Comic Con both says, potentially 80,000 at Accor and apparently the EuroBasketball vs NBL double header is selling fairly well.

I got tickets to the basketball, and maybe going to Comic Con. And that’s if I drop going to the AFLW Sydney Derby.

Even though the recommendation from the TPC is not binding, it is still another blow to Tasmania’s hopes of having its own AFL side.

The AFL Commission will hold a meeting in Melbourne next Monday, ahead of the Brownlow Medal later that night. You’d think that this morning’s news will be among the agenda at the meeting.

Oh boy, watch this blow up

Yep. Going to make sure I hold off on my return to social media for a while longer for my mental health and sanity.

This whole thing has been a huge debacle and has taken so long to even get to this point and now is just going to be even worse from here on. Such a mess and unfortunately those who are against will not see any benefits of anything so will always be against it and when it gets knocked back, they’ll celebrate and then move on to the next thing to be against.

Also, this is the same Planning Commission who turned down a massive development here in Devonport last year based on some pretty stupid reasons which was thankfully overturned by an act of Parliament to get it approved. Despite the overwhelming majority of the community being for the project and the huge need for another supermarket in the area it was knocked back because a couple of people would lose some of their business interests.

The full report can be downloaded. Seems very definitive.

Conclusion

The fundamental problem is the size, location and geographical features of the site, in its highly valued context, do not support the disproportionately large, monolithic building proposed. It is a building which is incongruent with the valued characteristics of its spatial context, completely at odds with the long-established planning principles guiding and informing development, and with the land and urban fabric surrounding the site and the heritage values associated with nearby places.

Proceeding with the Project will give rise to irrevocable and unacceptable adverse impacts on Hobart’s spatial and landscape character, urban form and historic cultural heritage.

In addition, the Project represents a significant net cost and will diminish the economic welfare of Tasmanians as a whole, and it offers almost no scope for the site to become a vibrant active place that is attractive to visit outside of major event mode.

In very simple terms, the stadium is too big for the site and the benefits it will bring are significantly outweighed by the disbenefits it creates

Premier is still determined to go ahead with the project:

ā€œWe vehemently disagree with the economic analysis [in the report]. It’s been massively underestimated in terms of the social and economic value of this project. Every single member of parliament will have their say on this project.ā€

The legislation required to give the project the go ahead still needs the support of 3 independents in the upper house.

Includes more comments from Premier Jeremy Rockliff and Greens MP Vica Bayley.

They need it if they want their own team otherwise blow up the idea and we stick with 18 teams.

Can’t they renovate Bellerive? And keep playing in Launceston until they’re ready in Hobart?

Nope, Bellerive is shite and in the middle of a residential area - can’t expand any further to build grandstands and there’s chaos with any crowds over 1000 because there’s no parking anywhere and narrow residential streets.

They should have gone ahead with the stadium as planned in the CBD with better public transport to it and then turned Bellerive into housing but unfortunately the Greens stirred up parochialism by saying only have things in Launceston knowing full well that the team must be based in Hobart and be a fully Tasmanian team - just like the Jackjumpers and the Hurricanes who all do the same thing.

If you missed it, the estimated capacity for concerts at Mac Point has been lifted to 38,000.

That's thousands of Tasmanians who dont have to leave the State, and can enjoy a world-class act right here at home.

It's thousands of visitors spending money in our small businesses, creating jobs, wealth and opportunity for Tasmanians.

That's what Mac Point unlocks for us. pic.twitter.com/Y3Lb1JVodM

I can only imagine that the whole comments section is filled with ā€œbut there’s nowhere to parkā€ and ā€œno acts will ever come hereā€ and every other bit of negativity.

A lot of international acts already bypass Adelaide, I’d be surprised if you get many going to Tassie.

even brisbane gets bypassed alot - to alot of internationals an australian tour is melbourne and sydney

I reckon that’s probably only true of the most ā€˜desirable’ of acts like TayTay.. I think the majority of them make the effort to go to BNE and PER, and sometimes ADL.

Most of the population is in Sydney and Melbourne. The big acts will easily bypass the smaller cities and make a bucket load.

It doesn’t even need to be the real big acts but there will definitely be some good ones that can come down. The Pub near us (Forth Pub) has had some huge gigs despite there only being a few hundred population with Pnau and Regurgitator and a heap of decent older bands that have still been pulling a crowd and with the right people involved there could be some great events at Mac Pt.
