I think it was due to TVW7 not affiliated with east coast stations until 1979 (forming the Seven Network that we know today). Before that, TVW7 had its own programming and presentation.

30 Years Ago today the 1996 Cricket World Cup commenced. Opening match between England v New Zealand was shown on Channel 9 on tape delay.

Though i believe that’s Optus’s Sports Australia showed matches live.

With today (February 28 of 2026) marking the passing of one of the greatest Racehorses of the 21st Century (Makybe Diva), I thought that I’d share with you all the 2005 Running of the _VRC Melbourne Cup_ Race, which was Seven’s fourth time exclusively broadcasting the Cup (Third of Fourteen where Greg Miles could be heard on Seven). This one was the third of three straight wins for the great mare.

Channel Seven footage of the 2008 Australian Open women’s semi-final between Ana Ivanovic and Daniela Hantuchova, which the former won after being down 0-6, 0-2.

In commentary were Sandy Roberts and Tracy Austin, with (a younger) Todd Woodbridge courtside (before he took on lead commentating duties in the ensuing years).

> Does anybody know why Channel 9 eventually stopped doing the late night highlights of the cricket matches? Was it simply seen as unnecessary since they no longer had the local market blackouts?

I landed in here tonight wondering the same thing! I’ve been watching some of the FlemishDog collection on that other site.

My guess is sometime in the mid/late 90s. They were definitely still going in 1994. A clue may lie in the matches shown on Cricket Gold; there are no tight highlight packages after the 1996-97 ODI series. The matches that they show after this are quite long form and have probably been manually edited.

I do remember highlights of some overseas tours not covered live, e.g. India and Pakistan 1998 (Foxtel had the rights to live coverage). I remember taping them whilst in primary school…they came on after Humphrey B. Bear as I inevitably got the outro 😃
