Sky News UK

I know you are, lol. I was explaining more for those who aren’t.

Instead of playing a news story to air like has been the gold standard for the last 70 years….they’re playing full news stories that have been filmed and cut as 16:9 in a 9:16 large screen standing to the side of the studio and filming that screen with someone on a steadicam.

Who does this actually speak to?

That’s not even to comment on having analysis off the back of each story not by experts…but just typically general round journalists.

I understand they want content they can clip up, post online, and get people interacting with it. But the 10p program is like Australian 6p. You can’t do that.

Caps of Sky’s coverage of the by-election earlier in the afternoon. Graphics still just like 2025 except much brighter.

Not sure what they thought when they scheduled special coverage to start at 11am AEDT, even though the result would come in after 3pm. (For comparison, BBC started at a reasonable 2pm.)

More of this will come on May 8.

Something new today - the “grid” has a breaking variant.

Well, at least it stayed on for a chaotic half year more…

Newman jumped from Channel 4 back in January and her last broadcast there was earlier this month.

And if the sofa theme is not a big enough hint on the look and feel of the show, look at her interview with The Times:

She has picked out the sofa, in squashy orange velvet, and talks excitedly about The Cathy Newman Show, which will have a rotating cast of MPs and peers and a “chatty, podcasty” feel, designed to be clipped on YouTube and TikTok. “Sky is the biggest UK news broadcaster on TikTok — ten million followers — and that’s a huge audience,” she says. “My kids [Newman has two daughters, aged 21 and 17] don’t watch Channel 4 News. Their friends don’t watch Channel 4 News. But they do get news on Instagram, TikTok and, increasingly, YouTube. So it’s embracing that.”

Could she come across any less likeabke? Yikes

I wonder if anyone at Sky has ever realised that backdrops ought to have some depth? This cheap photo look they love so much is embarrassing.

The show’s opening night. Lasted just 49 minutes before handing over to the breaking news.

That title there is not an endcap of a long opening. It’s merely a transition.

Seems odd she can’t do news coverage? Unless it’s pre-recorded?

Poor phrasing from me - the show was live. There was a switch to royal commentator Alastair Bruce for handling of the King & Queen’s arrival at 7.49pm.

Then Cathy briefly talked to Sarah-Jane to close out.

So it lasted for an hour then the next show began?

Yes.

So…nothing to note?

There was a 23-minute pre-recorded interview with the PM to begin with, which did make news in relation to the looming parliamentary inquiry.

It was well conducted, I’d say.

Will be interesting to see how the show evolves on its second night without a big interview dominating.

So your first post was incorrect? Cathy Newman’s show ran her full hour for her first night. Got it.

Comcast exits Sky News Arabia.

Internally, Sky executives have become increasingly concerned about the editorial position Sky News Arabia has taken on news in the region. Coverage of the atrocities carried out in Sudan by the UAE-backed paramilitary group, Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has been accused of whitewashing genocide.

And the channel is supposed to have an editorial oversight committee.
