Fox Showcase

Showcase was premium branding in my mind. Like HBO and Showtime. Making it another FOX channel, just cheapens it to me.

FOX SHOWCASE - Foxtel’s new premium On Demand drama destination

Foxtel today announced the launch of FOX SHOWCASE – a rebrand of its showcase drama channel – as the new streaming home of the best drama from Australia and around the world.

As the official Home of FX Originals, HBO and Foxtel Originals, FOX SHOWCASE is Foxtel’s new premium drama video on demand service for Foxtel customers, filled with a slate of exclusive first-run titles. Over 100 complete series are available On Demand, giving viewers the option to stream as many dramas as they want, whenever they want, at no extra cost to the drama pack.

Patrick Delany, Foxtel CEO, said, “Foxtel sets the bar as the gold standard in home entertainment in Australia. Our recent launch of FOX FLICKS brought an unrivalled movies experience to our subscribers with 1000s of movies to stream On Demand.

“Today, we’re raising that bar even higher by unveiling FOX SHOWCASE, which promises a massive line up of edgy, thought-provoking and inspiring drama from overseas power houses including FX and HBO, alongside our award-winning Foxtel Original dramas to stream when you want, where you want and as often as you want.

“FOX SHOWCASE provides extra value for subscribers included in the drama pack along with five premium drama channels. The Showcase channel will be re-branded as FOX SHOWCASE and will continue to be the linear home of drama premieres complementing the FOX SHOWCASE On Demand service.”

As the new ‘Home of FX Originals’, FOX SHOWCASE becomes Australia’s exclusive destination for FX’s critically acclaimed and award-winning original programming, including the currently airing American Horror Story, Mayans M.C., Pose and Snowfall, all new seasons of returning series such as American Crime Story, Better Things and Legion as well as upcoming FX Originals and FX’s extensive library content.

“We are thrilled to partner with Foxtel and launch the ‘Home of FX Originals’ as a single and exclusive destination for our complete slate of dramas and comedies in Australia,” said Eric Schrier, President of Original Programming and FX Productions.

Upcoming FX Originals include the six-part Australian drama Mr Inbetween, premiering Monday, October 1 at 8.30pm. Created by and starring Scott Ryan and directed by Nash Edgerton, the series is inspired by the critically acclaimed feature film The Magician, and delves into the very funny and very dark world of hitman “Ray Shoesmith.” The series also stars Brooke Satchwell.

On October 7 the FX Original Trust will premiere. Inspired by actual events, the series delves into the trials and triumphs of one of America’s wealthiest and unhappiest families, the Gettys. Created by Simon Beaufoy and directed by Academy Award-winning Danny Boyle, Trust stars an impressive cast led by Donald Sutherland, Hilary Swank, Harris Dickinson, Michael Esper and Brendan Fraser.

Currently in production for FX is What We Do In The Shadows, a television adaptation of the cult New Zealand feature film by the same name. The half-hour comedy is co-created by Jamaine Clement and Taika Waititi, and set to premiere in 2019. The series follows three vampires living in New York who have been roommates for hundreds of years and are struggling with the challenges of modern life.

FOX SHOWCASE is also Australia’s ‘Home of HBO’ featuring must-see programming including Game of Thrones, Westworld, The Deuce, Divorce, Veep, Ballers and Big Little Lies along with an extensive catalogue including Sex & The City, The Sopranos, The Leftovers, Boardwalk Empire and The Wire, available to stream On Demand at any time.

In 2019, viewers will finally experience the epic ending of Game of Thrones. The series will screen and stream on FOX SHOWCASE at the same time as the US, and all episodes of previous seasons are currently available to stream On Demand.

Next year FOX SHOWCASE will also premiere the third season of the Emmy and Golden Globe Award winning True Detective. Starring Oscar winner Mahershala Ali, the eight-part series follows the story of a detective investigating a macabre crime involving two missing children in the heart of the Ozarks, Arkansas.

And HBO’s huge hit series Big Little Lies will return for a second season and will be seen Express from the US on FOX SHOWCASE. Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman will again star and executive produce the Emmy Award-winning limited series, with three-time Oscar- winner Meryl Streep joining the cast.

FOX SHOWCASE is also the exclusive home to Foxtel’s own award-winning original dramas, which continue to break new ground and win local and international praise.

On October 28, Fighting Season, a six part event drama about Australian soldiers returning from Afghanistan, will premiere at 8.30pm on FOX SHOWCASE. Helmed by the award- winning Director Kate Woods and starring Jay Ryan, Ewen Leslie and Kate Mulvany, the series is a compelling mystery regarding a possible cover-up, where the lines between killer and family man, between hero and victim, between truth and imagination, are constantly shifting.

In 2019, TV Week Logie Award and AACTA Award-winning Australian drama Wentworth will return to FOX SHOWCASE for a seventh season, along with the highly anticipated second season of Secret City: Under the Eagle.

Currently, in post-production, new event drama Lambs of God stars Emmy winning Anne Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Essie Davis (Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries). The four-part series is an evocative drama about three nuns, each a generation apart, living in an isolated convent by the coast, when an unwelcome visitor enters their lives and changes their world forever. Lambs of God also features Jessica Barden, Sam Reid, Damon Herriman, Sigrid Thornton, Kate Mulvaney and John Bell.

Foxtel also announced the commission of new drama series The End that will commence filming in Queensland next week. A joint production with Sky UK and produced by See-Saw Films, The End stars internationally acclaimed actresses France O’Connor (The Missing) and Harriet Walter (Patrick Melrose). The 10-part, half hour series is about three generations of women with separate but intersecting obsessions – trying to figure out how to die with dignity, live with none and make it count. The cast will also feature Noni Hazlehurst, Robyn Nevin, Luke Arnold, John Waters and Alex Dimitriades.

Production is also about to roll on Upright, a landmark new series starring musician, actor and writer Tim Minchin. Written by Minchin and The Chaser’s Chris Taylor, and produced by Lingo Pictures, Upright is the story of two misfits, thrown together by chance in the middle of the Australian desert, who forge the unlikeliest of bonds in their quest to get a precious piano from one side of the country to the other.

Foxtel is home to the world’s best drama, and FOX SHOWCASE is the premium destination for over 100 complete series available On Demand at any time.

Trust

From Sunday 7 October at 9:30pm AEDT

Trust , the FX Original series about the trials and triumphs of one of America’s wealthiest and unhappiest families, the Gettys, will stream and screen on FOX SHOWCASE, Foxtel’s premium On Demand drama destination and Home of FX Originals, from Sunday, October 7 at 9.30pm AEDT.

Trust is created by Simon Beaufoy and executive produced by Danny Boyle, Beaufoy and Christian Colson, with Boyle directing the first three episodes. The 10-part scripted drama series tells the story of John Paul Getty III, heir to the Getty oil fortune. Equal parts family history, dynastic saga and satirical examination of the corrosive power of money, Trust is a story that attempts to unlock the mystery at the heart of every family, rich or poor.

The series takes place in 1973, when the young Getty is kidnapped in Rome and his mafia captors are banking on a multi-million dollar ransom. After all, what rich family wouldn’t pay for the return of a loved one? Trust charts the young man’s nightmare ordeal at the hands of kidnappers who cannot understand why nobody seems to want their captive back. The Italian police think it’s a prank and decline to investigate. Paul’s father is lost in a heroin daze in London and refuses to answer the phone. Paul’s grandfather - possibly the richest man in the world - is marooned in a Tudor mansion in the English countryside surrounded by five mistresses and a pet lion. He’s busy. Only Paul’s mother is left to negotiate with increasingly desperate kidnappers. Problem is, she’s broke.

I’m not sure why the producers felt the need for a television series on the Getty family so soon after the movie “All the Money in the World” covered the same subject matter. Coincidently I watched that movie last night and spent most of my time looking for continuity errors in the scenes in which Christopher Plummer replaced Kevin Spacey as Getty Snr.

The exclusive new HBO drama film My Dinner With Hervé starring leading actors Peter Dinklage and Jamie Dornan will stream and screen on FOX SHOWCASE, Foxtel’s premium On Demand drama destination and home of HBO, from Friday, October 26 at 8.30pm AEDT.

Inspired by a true story, My Dinner With Hervé explores the unlikely friendship between the world’s most famous French dwarf actor, Fantasy Island star Hervé Villechaize (played by Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage), and struggling Irish journalist Danny Tate ( Fifty Shades of Grey star Jamie Dornan) as it unfolds over one wild night in L.A. in 1993 – a raw and honest encounter that will have life-changing consequences for both.

My Brilliant Friend

From Tuesday 20 November at 8.30pm AEDT

The epic eight-part drama series My Brilliant Friend , based on Elena Ferrante’s sensational bestselling book of the same name, will stream and screen on FOX SHOWCASE, Foxtel’s premium On Demand drama destination, from Tuesday, November 20 at 8.30pm AEDT.

The much-anticipated Italian-language series will premiere in over 55 territories worldwide and is based on the first book in Ferrante’s four-part series of acclaimed novels, which trace the friendship of two girls in post-war Naples.

The first two episodes premiered at the 2018 Venice Film Festival and received a 10 minute standing ovation, with The Hollywood Reporter praising the series’ “extraordinarily promising beginning” and US Vogue stating the drama “marks a high point in the renaissance of Italian television.”

Filmed on location in Italy and including a cast of more than 150 actors and 5,000 extras, My Brilliant Friend tells the story of Elena Greco, a now-elderly woman who discovers the most important friend in her life, Raffaella ‘Lila’ Cerullo, has disappeared without a trace.

A writer, immersed in a house full of books, Greco turns on her computer and starts writing the story of their tempestuous friendship, starting from the point when Elena met Lila in their first year of school in 1950.

Set in a dangerous and fascinating Naples, their story goes on to cover more than 60 years of their lives, as she tries to describe the mystery of Lila, Elena’s brilliant friend and, in a way, also her best friend and worst enemy.

Casting for the series took place over a period of eight months, with over 8,000 children and 500 adults from Italy auditioning. Newcomers Elisa Del Genio and Ludovica Nasti were chosen to portray the two lead roles of Elena and Lila as young children, before giving way to two teenage actors, Margherita Mazzucco (Elena) and Gaia Girace (Lila).

My Brilliant Friend is an HBO, Rai Fiction and TIMVISION series, produced by Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani for Wildside and by Domenico Procacci for Fandango in co-production with Umedia Production. All episodes are directed by Saverio Costanzo ( Private, The Solitude of Prime Numbers, Hungry Hearts ). The story and screenplay is written by Elena Ferrante, Francesco Piccolo, Laura Paolucci and Saverio Costanzo. Jennifer Schuur is the executive producer.

Looks like My Brilliant Friend will be the first foreign-language series to air on Fox Showcase. It will be in Italian with English subtitles.

My Brilliant Friend has been renewed for a second season.

Set in London in the world of high-stakes public relations, the six-part series stars Paquin as the sharp and witty American PR agent Robyn, who is an expert at her craft but a complete self-saboteur when it comes to her personal life.

Flack centres around Robyn and her fellow PR “flacks” who must figure out how to make the best of bad situations and somehow manage to get out unscathed.

Directed by Academy Award nominee Peter Cattaneo ( The Full Monty ), the series features a stunning ensemble of female co-stars, including Academy Award nominee Sophie Okonedo ( Hotel Rwanda ), Genevieve Angelson ( House of Lies ), Lydia Wilson ( Black Mirror ) and Rebecca Benson ( The Crown ), as well as a strong lineup of supporting cast members Marc Warren ( The Good Wife) , Arinze Kene (Crazyhead) , Rufus Jones (Episodes) and Max Beesley ( Suits ).

Flack is equal parts comedy and drama, reflecting the brutal reality and complexities of modern life, where problems can go viral in an instant – and with PR serving as the perfect backdrop to explore these complexities.

Said Anna Paquin: “Oliver Lansley has written six of the best scripts I’ve ever read. He walks that fine line between intense character-driven drama and exceptionally intelligent humour. My character, Robyn, exists in a world where there are no moral absolutes and humour is used as a sharply executed defence mechanism to maintain the illusion of perpetual control.”

The series is created and executive produced by Oliver Lansley. It is a co-commission between UKTV in the UK and US network Pop TV and co-produced by Hat Trick Productions and Anna Paquin’s production company CASM Films.

What We Do In The Shadows

The FX Original New Verité Vampire Comedy

Starts Tuesday 2 April at 8.30pm AEDT

What We Do in the Shadows, the highly-anticipated new vampire comedy series, will stream on Foxtel and screen on FOX SHOWCASE, the home of FX Originals, from Tuesday, April 2 at 8:30pm AEDT.

Based on the feature film of the same name from Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, What We Do in the Shadows is a documentary-style look into the daily (or rather, nightly) lives of four vampires who’ve “lived” together for hundreds of years. In Staten Island.

The self-appointed leader of the group is “Nandor The Relentless” (Kayvan Novak), a great warrior and conqueror from the Ottoman Empire, who has taken the helm of the group despite many of his Old World tactics resulting in what some might politely refer to as bupkis. Then there’s the British vampire “Laszlo” (Matt Berry) – a bit of a rogue and a dandy and a fop, he might say. He’s a lover of mischief and a great soirée, but not as much as he loves seeing Nandor fail miserably in every attempt. And then there’s “Nadja” (Natasia Demetriou): the seductress, the temptress, the vampiric Bonnie to Laszlo’s Clyde. Her wisdom and provocative tales from times past allow us insight into the many ups and downs of living an immortal life.

Also cohabiting in the vampire household is “Guillermo” (Harvey Guillén), Nandor’s familiar (a.k.a. servant/protector during the daylight hours), who wants nothing more than to be made a real vampire just like his master. Also lurking about is “Colin Robinson” (Mark Proksch), an energy vampire and day-walker of sorts – he feasts on humans, but not on their blood. A frequent visitor is Nadja’s new friend, “Jenna” (Beanie Feldstein), a student at a nearby community college. She loves LARPing, boys, and art history, and for some reason has been rather confused lately as to why it is she so ravenously craves the flesh of the living.

After an unexpected visit from their dark lord and leader, “Baron Afanas,” the vampires are reminded of what they were initially tasked with upon their arrival in Staten Island over a hundred years ago – total and complete domination of the New World. But what exactly is the best way to go about achieving said domination? Our vérité camera crew follows along as the vampires set out to answer this query.

Clement created the 10-episode series. Clement, Waititi and Paul Simms are Executive Producers with Scott Rudin, Garrett Basch and Eli Bush. What We Do in the Shadows is produced by FX Productions and stars Matt Berry, Kayvan Novak, Natasia Demetriou, Harvey Guillén and Mark Proksch, who guest starred in the pilot before being promoted to series regular.

Mmm looks good.

In season one, Barry’s handler, Fuches (Stephen Root), hires Barry out to the deeply violent Chechen mob in Los Angeles, led by Goran Pazar (Glenn Fleshler). Barry’s target: an aspiring actor having an affair with Pazar’s wife. Through it all, Gwen plays an instrumental role in Bob’s work, not only as the greatest interpreter of his choreography, but as a largely unrecognized collaborator, even as their marriage unravels in the face of Bob’s increasingly self-destructive tendencies.

Featuring show-stopping choreography, including original pieces as well as some of the most iconic works of Bob and Gwen’s careers, such as Sweet Charity with Shirley MacLaine (1969), Cabaret with Liza Minnelli (1972) and All That Jazz with Roy Scheider (1979), FOSSE/VERDON will tell the story of these two brilliant, complicated individuals – the love they shared, the art they created, and the price they paid in the pursuit of greatness.
