The new season of the acclaimed hit family entertainment show Shark Tank makes an exciting return when it premieres tonight at 8.30pm, only on TEN and WIN Network.
First to take the plunge are three doctors who are looking to improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their carers on a global scale via their app, Cancer Aid.
Also on tonight’s episode is a chef who dreams of turning his personalised figurine business into a full-time career, an entrepreneur set to revolutionise recruitment and a 70-year-old business-savvy grandmother who is looking for backing in her artisan bakery.
Hosted by Studio 10’s Sarah Harris, Shark Tank features five of Australia’s business superstars: internet pioneer Steve Baxter, Boost Juice entrepreneur Janine Allis, international businessman Andrew Banks, RedBalloon experience founder Naomi Simson and Dr Glen Richards, founder of Australia’s largest pet-care company Greencross.
Having already invested over $9 million of their own money, Australia’s Sharks are out for the next great Aussie idea and aren’t afraid to take on each other in order to get it.
I wonder what Ten’s expectations are for tonight. Lots of promotion on the network (almost every break yesterday) plus radio spots across the weekend, billboards etc.
Also, lots of other sorts of promos with Naomi Simson a guest on The Project and Have You Been Paying Attention last night and Sarah Harris on Fitzy & Wippa’s radio show this morning.
Great episode tonight. It will be interesting to see the numbers with the weak competition compared to previous seasons. Could this be Ten’s strongest Tuesday YTD?
Another great episode tonight. I feel like this season is edited better then previous seasons. Something about it feels different. The sharks seem to be getting a lot more personal with the entrepreneurs.
I noticed last night that they skimmed through a couple of silly presentations that obviously didn’t go anywhere. They definitely didn’t do stuff like that previous seasons.
Absolutely loving this show and agree with others that it’s one of the best things on TV.
So what is the update? After selling the business has it finally got off the ground?
The Studio 10 segment didn’t show much - but they have an update on their website.
It turns out Glen didn’t end up buying or investing in the business, but he has given them some help along they way.
I wonder why he didn’t end up investing in the business? It’s starting to make me feel like it was done just for the cameras and to give the viewer a happy ending for a struggling business/product. I wonder how often they make deals on the show that fall through?
According to a newspaper article a couple of years ago, the on screen handshake isn’t binding. Each businesses’ finances are thoroughly checked to ensure their has been no misrepresentation and everything is above board. Both sharks and entreprenaurs have backed out of deals in the past.
It would be interesting to have a catch up show so viewers could see what businesses have been a success and what ones have struggled.
Naturally all deals would be subject to due dilligence on both sides. Given the lack of business experience shown, I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot are misrepresented purely as a result of ignorance, plus its easy for a lot of negatives to get overlooked or sugar coated in a 5 minute pitch.
They often show grabs about business deals that have been successful. I can’t imagine they’d want to go around advertising how many aren’t though - it wouldn’t be the best advertisement for the show. Unfortunately though, the deals that fell through or business that didn’t take off would be the most interesting stories.
That makes a lot of sense however if deals haven’t gone through maybe they should do a quick 30 second snippet at the end of the episode and inform the viewers if any of them fell through. It’s frustrating watching the show, seeing a deal go through and then later on reading that it never eventuated.
