Seven West Media and SCA Merger

How does that work when the ABC and SBS are doing it on 201, 202 etc and 301, 302 etc. as audio channels.

Because they’re not commercial in nature? Well at least ABC, SBS less so but unsure if their radio stations carry advertising.

They’re not commercial.

Agree, commercial radio stations have a licence to broadcast within an allocated licence area on a set broadcast frequency, power and location. The radio stations on TV frequencies would be broadcasting on an unlicensed frequency and outside their licence areas plus they would be in potential competition to other radio stations.

No to mention a waste of finite bandwidth better served to convert SD channels to HD.

I suspect we could look to Tasmania to see how SCA ran / might run TV stations.

Paid content from Christian groups and TV shopping might very well be the most profitable part of the TV operation, but also that combined sales proposition of TV and two radio stations would be compelling to an advertiser, a one stop shop. We certainly used to see and here ads across Hit and MMM also featuring on SCA7.

Lets be honest however, both SCA and Seven have said they will run the businesses separately, Print, TV, Radio and Listnr/7Plus/Web. So savings are going to be in the combined services such as HR, Engineering, IT, Property and combining sales.

The biggest winners out of this might not be the shareholders, but companies such as BAI or TXA buying and managing TX assets, IT providers presenting a combined sales and HR platform, and someone like Telstra providing distribution of content.

Time will tell I guess.

I also thibk they will sell their jount ventures in WA & Queensland to meet media ownership rules, That they can still retain Triple M & Hit & they would only have to sell one station in Mildura which I can’t see as being a big deal as they would still have a voice in the market.

As seen in the 7cricket thread, it has already started.

I don’t think that would stop them. The UK seems to be doing it on Freeview with no problems, and streaming audio on TV bandwidth wouldn’t take up a whole lot of spectrum if it was in mono.

Don’t forget too, the advertising carried on the extensions are (mostly) national and very little if any, is market specific. I think the Nova extensions have local advertising but not the SCA and ARN extensions , which some are on DAB in 5 metro markets as opposed to just one market for the Nova extensions. CADA is on DAB in 9 markets.

The UK clearly has different broadcasting regulations to here. The broadcasting regulations here prohibit it for commercial operators/licences whether it’s technically feasible or not.

I was supposed to publish Christmas Eve but just got around it. Just for obvious confirmation:

Perhaps 7News on MMM will be next.

Which will probably start with bulletins and then moving to 6pm TV simulcast.

I’m thinking SCA will follow Nine’s lead.
e.g. ‘The Mission’ plays — Triple M Melbourne 105.1.
‘The Mission’ slowly fades out.

and [reporter name], Seven News.

Do we have any idea what the proposed merger name will be? Seven Media?

There’s no way they’re simulcasting 7News on MMM.

Time will tell, plenty of opportunities there over the next few years for integration, and it will be up to the business to determine which avenues they take and which they do not take.

Asa mentioned earlier - the name will be Southern Cross Media. It would take a shareholder vote to change the name

That’s not insurmountable

Possible yes but the question was what will the merged company be called - its Southern Cross Media
