The start of DST in three out of the five metro markets is clearly having an effect on the news ratings, although Seven News Sydney will be pretty happy that they managed to have a rare Friday win against Nine News Sydney in the ratings last night along with the 2nd half win on Thursday.
While Nine News Sydney has basically already won the ratings year, Seven News Sydney should be very disappointed if they don’t win ratings weeks during October & November (especially with the sporting events that Seven has coming up, while Nine has to wait until November 23 for The Ashes to start).
I’m sure the Sydney newsrooms are hoping for a big wet and/or thunderstorms in November, because the recent warm/dry weather along with DST kicking in has really hurt the ratings!
Rather interesting to see that the ratings of Nine News Sydney decreased this week while the numbers went up for the Melbourne & Brisbane bulletins.
Of course it was also around this week last year that Seven won their first non-Olympics ratings year for 2016, but I wonder if Lisa Wilkinson (who if I’m not mistaken, grew up in Campbelltown - so probably a popular presenter out in the Western suburbs of Sydney) defecting from Nine to Ten on Monday night might’ve had an effect on the Sydney news ratings?

Big drops in Brisbane brought down the national average. Seven News Brisbane’s Friday bulletin was its lowest rating for the year despite being 30 minutes and leading into RLWC coverage.
Seven was also behind Nine here in Sydney last night.
The next couple of ratings weeks could be interesting, with Nine about to launch Family Food Fight as The Block wraps up with Seven having the advantage of live sports coverage.

Big drops again for bulletins in Brisbane both recording survey lows (well deserved considering the content ). Nine News nationally recorded a 2017 low.
Seven News Sydney (6pm) won every night, expect last night, taking out the week Impressive and deserved victory. Despite just losing overall (6pm + 6:30pm combined).
Interesting to see a win for Seven News Sydney’s 6pm portion (by a very narrow margin, but still) while Nine News Sydney retained the lead for the 6.30pm half hour.
Heading into 2018, the big question for Nine News Sydney will be how to retain viewers in the later months of the year. Meanwhile Seven News Sydney needs to work on their weekend ratings.
Although I personally think the Sydney newsroom probably should be a little concerned (with Seven having a Rugby League World Cup match on last night and everything) about last night’s ratings result, at the same time I could imagine the person pictured below being particularly happy that Seven News Sydney didn’t win on the one weeknight he doesn’t present the bulletin!
I’m not really sure if RLWC (which only airs across weekend) should automatically give Seven News more viewers. As you rightly pointed out, Nine News are still dominant in that market across 2017.

Red across the board with all Brisbane timeslots suffering significant drops. Nine recorded its lowest audience of the year. Hopefully it is because viewers are not liking the increased tabloid content seen in recent weeks; not to mention that we our now seeing recycled stories. Sorry for continually mentioning Brisbane but the quality of the 6pm bulletins is a pet aversion of mine
