He can expect all he likes but he can’t demand they broadcast it on the main channel if the contract never stipulated it be broadcast on the main channel.

The article does say the following when talking about the contract.

> Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley told The Australian Financial Review the organisation intends to honour the fifth year of its current contract with Seven and clarified the Australian Open must be shown on its main channel.

Time for CA to step up and say THEY expect the cricket to be shown on the main channel.

Thanks Cynic. I don’t pay for AFR so never saw that.

Does it matter whether it is on main or primary channels? It’s all free and available for audiences. Or do some households not have access to multichannels?

What? so you think it doesn’t matter if its HD or Blur-O-Vision SD

I don’t notice that much of a difference between main or primaries and suspect most ordinary people don’t either.

I hope that happens too. Even though I’m sure Seven really want to keep both for massive ratings during Summer 2018-19, both Cricket Australia & Tennis Australia would benefit from having different broadcasters IMO.

In 2018, almost everyone should have some form of access to Seven, 7TWO & 7mate via either the network itself or an affiliate.

Some regional/remote areas (well…all outside the aggregated East Coast markets) don’t have 7Flix though which might be an issue if the channel has to be used for an hour during the news or something.

Even though I also personally think having all major sporting events on free to air TV in HD is the ideal scenario, I’m not really sure if the typical “mum and dad” viewers really care which picture resolution the tennis or cricket is in just as long as they can see it.

Going by the ego of some CA execs, anything’s possible!

But as a one off next year, with CA knowing well before any contracts had been signed that Seven (if they were to become a parnter) still had the 2019 Aus Open contracted and it’s always been on the main channel.

It’s a test that won’t rate that high anyway and knowing Seven / Foxtel are CA’s future, they should just lump this _one week_.

I agree but the ball in Tennis can be a blur when it comes to line decisions, they just need to lift the bitrate for that channel and yes it can look reasonable

Seven have confirmed they’re broadcasting the tennis next summer. TA said they’re committed to Seven next summer. And Seven are contracted for cricket for next number of years.

Not sure why one journalist, who is known for this sort of news, has suddenly caused speculation again.

Seems very ‘case closed’ to me.

The report ends the speculation about the possibility of Seven putting some of the ‘main’ coverage of the Australian Open on a multichannel so that they can show the Sri Lankan test on the main channel.

Unless Seven and TA can come to an agreement about a ‘different approach’, it seems (if what TA are saying is correct) Seven are contractually required to have the ‘main’ AO coverage each day be aired on the main channel

That’s unlikely I think.

And it’ll only happen if CA play hard ball, which wouldn’t be good for them, as it might alienate Seven who have just stumped up all that cash.

CA will just have to accept the 2019 situation is what it is, which I’m sure they will, now the new broadcast rights are finally done and dusted.

Nine director of sport Tom Malone told [Mediaweek](https://mediaweek.com.au/nine-sport-tom-malone-tennis-rights/) that he had not had direct discussions about the network buying the rights to next year’s Australian Open from Seven. Malone added Nine was still interested in showing the tournament one year earlier if the price is right, but:

> We wouldn’t be able to go much later than this month to decide on that because there is a whole lot of work to do on production and commercialisation.

The SMH reporting that Seven and Nine are still in discussions about a deal. There is speculation that if Seven sells the tennis to Nine for more than the $40 million that Seven originally paid Tennis Australia, that Tennis Australia would be expecting to take a cut of the increased price.

Why? Nine has the most to gain from any deal that might be made which is why Seven is playing hardball.

Exactly. Fair enough. They’re not just going to give it away. May even ask more than $60m if this drags out into a mess.

Still looks 90% most likely it’s all talk/media spin and Seven will keep next year’s Open. The fact Seven themselves, from CEO down to Melbourne GM have confirned and already started planning says a lot.

Nine probably assumed weeks ago they didn’t have a chance and were never going to offer more than $40m. Media already ran articles on Nine’s alternate summer programming.

This is all the media’s doing, spearheaded by Mr Davidson and Co at News Ltd.

There has been quotes from both sides around the interest in Nine taking up a deal a year early. This is not made up.

So many differing articles and opposing those statements already made by Seven makes all of this suspicious.

How long are Seven going to drag this out anyway, Malone from Nine tolD Mediaweek they couldn’t wait much longer than the end of this month (which is today).

Of course Nine want tennis, duh.
